Kitzbuhel – Kirchberg With Kids

Kitzbuhel is a world famous ski resort situated in the eastern part of Tyrol. It is not only a small, comfortable old town of striking beauty- this region includes also skiing villages Kirchberg, Aurach, Jochberg, Pass Thurn, Aschau, Stukogel, Resterhohe, and Wright.

In each town in the Kitzbuhel ski area all the practice lifts and transportation in the form of ski buses can be used free of charge, and Kitzbuhel and Kirchberg are even connected by the railway.

Perhaps for some people this Austrian ski resort with its abundance of restaurants, casinos, luxury boutiques and pretentious public may not seem like a place for vacationing with children. However, Kitzbuhel`s excellent skiing conditions for beginners, great tourist infrastructure, and a large variety of children’s ski schools and family programs attracts more and more people who are planning a vacation with children in Austria.

The numbers speak for themselves – many are pleased with their experience and decide to return. It is also noteworthy that the airports of Innsbruck, Salzburg, and Munich are not too far away from Kitzbuhel, so you can usually expect a short, pleasant transfer from the airport to the hotel.

Ski season in Kitzbuhel begins in November and ends in the second half of April. Perfectly groomed slopes are suitable for both experienced skiers and beginners. For beginners there are the gentle “blue” routes in one of the most popular ski areas called Pengelstein.

Flat, short, simple slopes are also offered in the Kitzbuehel Horn ski area and the main ski area in Kirchberg. Confident skiers are beckoned by ski safari, there are 120 km of connected slopes with an altitude variation of 800-2000 m.

Also this resort is notable for the fact that every year in January one of the most prestigious stages of the World Cup is held on the track “Streif”, where your family may become members of the international team of fans and see this breathtaking competition for yourselves. Your children will learn skiing with even greater zeal and strive for the same success these athletes have achieved.

Kitzbuhel is a ski resort that has all the right conditions for adults and children to learn skiing. There are nearly a dozen of professional ski schools which will please you with well-trained instructors and quality results from your training.

The most famous – Rote Teufel and Element3 – offer their young visitors separate children’s parks with gentle slopes and brightly colored equipment for training, as well as a kindergarten. Children aged 3 and older are welcomed to attend the school. Skiing is not the only entertainment for kids in Kitzbuehel.

There are enough activities to keep them occupied from morning till evening. The Mercedes-Benz Sport Park in Kitzbuehel is built specially for all fans of active pastimes. In it you will find a curling sheet, a climbing wall, an outdoor skating rink, and tennis courts. The Aquarena water entertainment center with its pools, saunas, steam room, solariums, children’s playroom, and bars will be another nice place for the family to rest.

Here you can comfortably relax and recuperate after skiing. For owners of ski passes there are special discounts at the center.

Accommodation in Kitzbuehel is quite expensive, and is dominated by four-star hotels with the highest level of service. But you can always pick up low cost options in the form of cheap hotels or apartments that are family-oriented.

Unfortunately, very few Kitzbuehel hotels offer additional services for young travelers in the form of the children’s rooms, mini clubs, special entertainment programs for kids, and other “children’s” services, which can be found in the hotels of Serfaus or the Stubai Valley. Perhaps this is due to the fact that a large variety of entertainment that is inclusive for children is already offered in the sports and entertainment venues of the city.

In summer Kitzbuhel continues to welcome tourists, offering a large range of activities for the whole family. Well-groomed trails and mountain routes with a total length of more than 1000 km and more than 90 tours of varying lengths and degrees of difficulty will delight lovers of hiking.

Mountain biking is represented in the region by 800 kilometers of mountain bike trails and 1,200 kilometers of road biking trails. Kitzbuhel is also considered the center of alpine golf. Five golf courses are located right in the city, and another 19 were built not far from the center of the resort.

During warmer months families with children can have a great timey going on a tour of nearby castles (Lebenberg, Kaps) or visiting the children’s summer amusement parks, such as Kaiswerwelt in Scheffau or Elm’s Zauberwelt in Elmau.

You can also enjoy the beauty of summer alpine scenery, going up the panoramic road leading to the top of Kitzbuhel Horn. Five kilometers from the resort center in the village of Aurach there is a wildlife park where kids can meet many animals and even feed them. There is also a large playground. Summer family vacations in Kitzbuhel are no less diverse and interesting than in the winter season, and you are sure to be pleased with the beauty of these places, the level of service, and the variety of entertainment for children and adults.

Choosing a place for families with children

At first, considering accommodation options in Kitzbuhel, families with children should pay attention to the hotels that are either in the Kitzbuhel or Kirchberg – a small, cozy town located just 6 km from the center of the resort that shares a common ski area with Kitzbuhel.

Kirchberg is worth considering for those who want to relax after intense skiing. It is a great option for a stay with small children. This town is not as noisy and busy as Kitzbuhel, but at the same time it has good tourist infrastructure: supermarkets, shops, numerous restaurants and pubs, pastry shops, ski schools, and ski equipment rentals.

The short distance from Kitzbuhel allows easy movement within the resort using a taxi or skibus. Compared with Kitzbuhel there is not only a more relaxing environment in Kirchberg, but it is also considered a better place to find a low-budget accommodation option.

If you come without a car, please note when choosing a hotel room or apartment those situated either close to the chair lift Majerle, or in the center of Kirchberg (near Kirche or Dorf) can save you the from the morning waits or travel time in buses and taxis. The Nord and Sud areas are beyond the railroad and are rather far from the center.

Kitzbuhel, the center of the resort, is a cozy and very beautiful city with well-preserved medieval streets and houses painted in different colors. The old town pedestrian zone is closed to motor vehicles.

There is a well-developed tourist infrastructure, the intensive après-ski-program, recreation centers and sports, and a good selection of comfortable hotels with excellent service (mainly “4 stars”). It is noisier and glitzier than Kirchberg. Kitzbuhel is recommended especially for families with school age children.
