Salzburg With Kids

Vacationing in Austria with children not only means perfect ski resorts where it is pleasant to spend time with the whole family in winter and summer. Vacationing here is also rich excursion programs in almost every major city in Austria.

Salzburg, the fourth largest city in the country, is no exception. A family holiday in Salzburg will make everyone happy: walking through the Old Town, seeing castles and squares, visiting a variety of interesting museums, and the atmosphere of this miniature fairytale town will delight the young and old alike.

If you were wondering how to add some variety to your vacation at a ski resort or supplement a sightseeing trip to Austria, be sure to include this amazing city that is bound impress you.

Salzburg is located at the foot of the Alps in the western part of the country on the border with Germany. From here to Munich it is about 150 km, to Vienna — 300 km.

The river Salzach divides the city into two parts, connected by a wide bridge: on the left side there is the old city, the main interest of tourists, on the right — the new one.

Salzburg is very convenient for hiking and sightseeing with children, since all the interesting places are close to each other and you do not have to make many tiring trips from one end of town to the other. So if you don’t have lot of time to spend on trips to museums and castles, it will be enough to have a walk through the Old Town: on the main tourist street Getreidegasse there is the Mozart museum, cozy courtyards, and many shops and cafes.

On the same street there is a two-story store of handmade Christmas decorations (it is open year round), which will delight any child. Salzburg is also interesting for its varied and sometimes bizarre signs and billboards. Even the most modern companies are required to design their signage in an “antique” way, so as not to affect the look of the old city.

Salzburg offers a varied program for the whole family: you will always find something to inspire and interest young tourists. Be sure to visit the fortress Hohensalzburg — the largest and most completely preserved fortress complex in Central Europe. It is very convenient to travel to the fortress by funicular, located on the Festungsgasse Street.

Ride around the city in a carriage, take a stroll through the many squares, and visit the chic Mirabel Park, where it is so nice to rest. Near the park there is a great playground called “The Magic Flute”, where there are plenty of facilities for children to jump, slide or swing on. The children’s program can be completed by a trip to the zoo, or, for example, to the Museum of Nature, or the Toy Museum with a special playroom for the kids.

If we talk about the most comfortable time for travelling with children to Salzburg, we can safely assert that this city is interesting and comfortable in any season- whether it is during the Christmas season when the city turns into a fairy tale or in its equally beautiful spring, summer, and autumn months.

If you have planned an intense program of excursions around the city, we recommend you purchasing a Salzburg Card, which allows you to use public transport and visit all the museums, exhibitions, and attractions of this wonderful city for free.

Choosing a place for families with children in Salzburg

Salzburg is a small and charming town with good hotels and a high level of service. Regardless of whether you choose to stay in the older part of the city or the new, you can easily get to any sights on foot, by bus, or on the trolley.

If you are planning a trip with young children be sure to consider the hotels located either near the center of the Old Town or as close to it on the other side. If you travel by car, you should consider the fact that the hotels in downtown area may have difficulty with parking space. We recommend asking the manager of the hotel about this while you are booking.
