African American History Summer Camp

African American History Summer Camp

Charleston, SC, USA

Overview

Step back in time this summer with your children as they submerge themselves in the deep-rooted narrative of the African-American community through the African American History Summer Camp. Nestled on the historic grounds of the former Avery Normal Institute, this camp exposes young minds to a treasure of rich traditions, legacies, and influence of African Americans, specifically those from Charleston, the South Carolina Low-country, and South Carolina as a whole. Every corner of this immersive camp whispers tales of the past—a once thriving hub for Charleston’s African-American society that shaped and empowered its students for professional fields and leadership quests from 1865 to 1954. Thanks to the Honorable Lucille Whipper and the Avery Normal Institute alumni, this significant heritage was preserved through the establishment of the Avery Research Center in 1985 in partnership with the College of Charleston. In the same spirit of preservation, the camp utilizes the Avery Research Center, a vast repository boasting nearly 4000 primary and secondary-source materials. These treasures document the story of African Americans and their role in the larger American narrative. An unforgettable detour from usual summer activities, the African American History Summer Camp offers an important academic focus—enriching children's understanding of history and environment. Who said that learning can't be fun? Chip off the old block, this camp paints a vivid picture of history running back centuries, igniting curiosity, fostering understanding, and bridging the gap between past and present. It's not just a camp—it's an enlightening journey through time. Pack your bags for an unforgettable adventure into history!
