Alford Lake Camp

Maine, ME, USA

Overview

Ah, the great outdoors! A place where young minds can roam free, where adventure beckons at every turn, and where dreams and friendships are forged under the open sky. Welcome to Alford Lake Camp, a place steeped in tradition and fueled by the spirit of exploration since its inception in 1907. Upon the vision of Dr. Susan Kingsbury and Florence Marshall, Alford Lake Camp sprang into existence, aiming to prove that, yes indeed, young women can not only survive but also thrive amidst nature's splendor. The legacy began with a daring band of eighteen girls, spending eight weeks within the soothing embrace of the wilderness. Over the years, Alford Lake Camp has evolved yet retained its core essence, thanks to the leadership of four distinct directors, each infusing their unique touch into its fabric. The result? An environment that exudes respect, challenge, warmth, and a sense of community that endures long after the campfires have died down. Despite embracing changes that time brings—like trading horse-driven mail delivery for modern means, or swapping woolen bathing suits for Lycra—the spirit of Alford Lake Camp remains beautifully unaltered. Wake up calls still come from the reveille, not an alarm clock. Adventure still waits, be it in mastering the art of archery, riding horseback, sailing, or exploring nearby mountains. And singing, a cherished tradition, remains a melodious thread woven throughout the camp’s daily life, echoing around the campfire, the dining table, and the trail. When June rolls in, Alford Lake Camp springs back to life, welcoming another generation of campers eager to discover the magic that has captured hearts for over a century.
