Overview

ArtReach San Diego Summer Camp is a day camp focused on visual arts, creative confidence, and community. The camp is designed for elementary-aged students and is led by the Studio Programs Team. Each camp explores a theme through hands-on art projects, collaborative activities, and playful learning.

The atmosphere is creative, welcoming, and child-centered. Campers spend the day moving between art lessons, studio projects, snack breaks, outdoor games, lunch, outdoor play, brain-break games, meditation, and final-project time. The program is not just about keeping kids busy with crafts. Campers are introduced to daily lessons inspired by contemporary artists, then use those ideas to make their own artwork.

ArtReach’s camp is especially suited for children in the elementary school years who enjoy drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, printmaking, and mixed-media projects. It may also work well for children who are curious about art but do not yet see themselves as “artists,” because the camp emphasizes encouragement, confidence, and exploration rather than perfection.

The camp also includes social and reflective elements. Campers collaborate, build friendships, participate in a community agreement, and end the week with an art show celebrating their work. For kids who like a mix of studio time, movement, and creative expression, this camp offers a balanced day.

Why We Love It

  • Real studio projects: Kids make hands-on artwork through painting, printmaking, sculpture, collage, and mixed media.
  • Creative confidence: Campers are encouraged to experiment, share ideas, and feel proud of what they create.
  • Balanced camp day: Art time is mixed with outdoor play, games, meditation, breaks, and a final art show.

Best For

  • Elementary artists: Best for kids who enjoy drawing, painting, building, and trying different art materials.
  • Creative explorers: A good fit for kids who like themed projects and learning from artist-inspired lessons.
  • Social makers: Works well for kids who enjoy group activities, collaboration, and showing finished work.

Accommodation and Meals

Accommodation

ArtReach San Diego Summer Camp is a day camp. It does not include overnight accommodation, cabins, dorm rooms, or residential supervision. Campers attend during the day and are picked up in the afternoon.

The daily schedule begins with drop-off and check-in from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m. Camp activities run throughout the day and officially end by 3:00 p.m. Pick-up takes place from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m., followed by a short grace period from 3:30 to 3:45 p.m.

Because this is a studio-based day program, families should plan for daily transportation. Guardians must walk their child to the front desk and physically sign them in each day. At pick-up, only people listed on the child’s Sawyer account may pick up the camper, and a matching driver’s license or ID card is required.

Meals

Campers need to bring their own lunch and snacks. The packing list includes a water bottle, lunch, snacks, comfortable clothing and shoes for art and outside play, and sunscreen. A water refill station is available on site.

The daily schedule includes snack time and a bathroom break from 10:20 to 10:40 a.m. Lunch is scheduled from 11:55 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., followed by outdoor play. There is also a water and bathroom break in the early afternoon.

Meals are not described as a catered or provided service. Families should plan to pack food that works for a full, active camp day. Since the program includes studio art, outdoor games, and outdoor play, practical food and hydration planning matters. Clothes and shoes should also be comfortable enough for both art-making and movement.

Safety

ArtReach describes its camp as a safe, inclusive, and joyful environment where every camper can participate and build confidence. The camp is led by the Studio Programs Team, with teaching staff playing a central role in creating a supportive setting.

Staff are described as carefully selected and trained elementary educators, professional artists, and/or college students majoring in art, education, or child development. Every staff member is required to participate in a pre-camp training session and have prior experience working in classrooms or camp settings.

Camp traditions

ArtReach Summer Camp has a clear weekly rhythm built around creativity, community, and celebration. Each camp explores a theme, and campers work through hands-on projects inspired by contemporary artists. This gives every week a fresh creative focus while keeping the day familiar and structured.

The daily Morning Meeting includes a studio tour, safety introduction, and community agreement. That routine helps campers understand the space, expectations, and group culture before moving into the day’s projects. It also supports the camp’s emphasis on connection, collaboration, and confidence.

Another repeated part of the camp day is the balance between art-making and breaks. Campers move from studio work to a snack, outdoor games, lunch, outdoor play, brain-break games, meditation, and more art time. This makes the day feel active without losing the creative focus.

The end-of-camp art show is the clearest camp tradition. Campers get to celebrate their work, see what others created, and share finished pieces after a week of studio exploration.
