Camp Walden Maine

Camp Walden Maine

Denmark, ME, USA

Overview

Venture into the heart of Maine where Camp Walden stands as a testament to the vision of two forward-thinking educators from the early 20th century. This all-girls camp, founded in 1916, has been a sanctuary for city girls to immerse themselves in the great outdoors, far removed from the hustle and bustle of their daily lives. The camp's founders, Blanche Hirsch and Clara Altschul, aimed to create an oasis where girls could not only explore the wilderness but also foster values of respect, trust, and consideration for others. Drawing inspiration from Thoreau’s Walden, they sought to cultivate an environment that encouraged sportsmanship and the pursuit of excellence in all activities. Over the years, Camp Walden has expanded from a modest 30 campers to over a hundred, upholding traditions that were initiated in its early days. Think "Splash", an exciting water-based activity, and the camaraderie of having a campsister. Picture the excitement and anticipation of Saturday night bunk shows or the sheer tranquility of Sunday evening campfires. One cannot talk about Camp Walden without mentioning the legendary Helen Herz Cohen. Affectionately known as Miss Herz, she assumed the mantle of camp director in 1938 and held it for nearly 60 years. Miss Herz left an indelible mark on countless Waldenites with her firm belief in every camper's potential and her passion for instilling self-confidence and self-worth. Camp Walden, with its rich history and enduring values, continues to be a haven where girls can don backpacks, paddle canoes and kayaks, and sail into the embrace of nature while learning invaluable life lessons.
