Colburn Musical Theater Intensive is a specialized summer program for students who want to deepen their skills in musical theatre through structured, professional-level training. Hosted by the Colburn School, the program focuses on the core disciplines of musical theatre—voice, acting, and movement—and on how these elements come together to tell a story on stage.
The atmosphere is focused, supportive, and intentionally rigorous. Students spend their days in classes, rehearsals, and ensemble work that emphasize technique, expression, and collaboration. Instruction is led by experienced teaching artists who guide students through vocal work, character development, and physical storytelling, helping them build both technical skill and artistic confidence.
This program is best suited for middle and high school–aged students who already have experience in musical theatre or related performing arts and are comfortable performing in front of others. Participants should be motivated, prepared to take direction, and open to constructive feedback. Being surrounded by peers with similar goals creates a strong sense of community and shared purpose. For students considering more advanced training in the performing arts, this intensive offers a meaningful glimpse into what serious musical theatre study looks like.

Colburn Musical Theater Intensive offers both day and residential options. Day students attend all scheduled classes and rehearsals during the day and return home each evening.
Students enrolled in the residential option stay in on-site housing and experience a structured, supervised living environment alongside their peers. A single-occupancy room option is available for those who prefer a private living space. Residential life is designed to support focus, rest, and a sense of independence while remaining closely connected to the daily program.
Students staying in the dorms are required to purchase a meal plan. Meal plan funds must be used at the Colburn Cafe and are non-refundable. This arrangement ensures residential students have regular access to meals throughout the day as part of their on-campus routine.
Day students are responsible for their own meals and snacks. Families typically plan for lunch and any needed snacks to support a full, active day of classes and rehearsals.
The program takes place in a professional educational setting designed for young artists. Students are supervised during scheduled activities, classes, and rehearsals, with clear routines that support an organized and respectful environment.
For residential participants, housing areas follow established guidelines to promote safety and well-being. Staff members are present to support students and help maintain appropriate structure throughout the program. The overall setting encourages focus, responsibility, and care for both physical and emotional safety.
As a structured summer program, basic health needs are handled with care and attention. Staff are prepared to respond to minor issues and provide basic first aid if necessary.
Families are encouraged to share relevant medical information in advance so individual needs can be supported appropriately. Daily schedules include breaks to rest, hydrate, and reset between physically and vocally demanding activities. Attention is given to helping students manage energy, voice care, and overall well-being during intensive training days.
Colburn Musical Theater Intensive reflects the Colburn School’s long-standing tradition of excellence in the performing arts. A central tradition of the program is commitment—students are expected to show up prepared, engaged, and ready to grow through disciplined work.
Another defining element is ensemble culture. Participants learn to support one another, listen closely, and collaborate as a group. This shared process helps students understand that strong musical theatre performances are built on trust, teamwork, and mutual respect.
Performance and preparation are also key traditions. Students regularly apply their training in rehearsal and presentation settings, developing confidence and professionalism. These traditions create a meaningful experience grounded in artistic growth and shared achievement.
The activities program is centered on intensive musical theatre training. Each day combines classes in acting, voice, and movement with rehearsals that integrate these skills into performance work. Students develop technique while also learning how to apply it in an ensemble setting.
Training emphasizes clarity of storytelling, vocal strength, physical awareness, and character development. Group work and rehearsals help students practice collaboration, take direction, and build confidence through repetition and refinement.
Admission to the program is selective and requires an audition. Applicants are evaluated across three areas: voice, acting, and dance. Auditions assess musical theatre readiness through contrasting vocal selections, a memorized contemporary monologue, and a short movement or dance demonstration. This process helps ensure that students are placed in an environment that matches their experience level and supports meaningful growth.
Colburn Musical Theater Intensive is designed for motivated students who are ready to commit to disciplined, high-level musical theatre training. The audition-based structure helps ensure a strong learning environment where participants can grow confidently, supported by experienced faculty and dedicated peers.
