Cottonwood Gulch Summer Adventure

Cottonwood Gulch Summer Adventure

Thoreau, NM, USA

Overview

Calling all adventurers, history buffs, and nature enthusiasts between the ages of 10 and 19! Cottonwood Gulch Camp offers a unique exploration of the enchanting Southwest. Since its inception in 1926, the camp has been dedicated to immersing young minds in the wilderness, culture, and ecology of this captivating landscape. The campers, also known as Trekkers, engage in a myriad of activities, varying in duration and type, depending on their age. Younger Trekkers (10-13 years) mostly stay at the 540-acre Base Camp located in the picturesque Zuni Mountains of New Mexico. Meanwhile, older Trekkers (13-18 years) spend much of their time journeying around the vibrant Four Corners area. Backpacking, hiking, river trips, and rock climbing form the backbone of the camp's core activities, all designed to foster a deep appreciation for the wilderness. However, the journey doesn't stop at the great outdoors. The camp also offers a hands-on exploration of Southwestern art, archaeology, and Native American culture, offering a comprehensive insight into this unique region. But what truly distinguishes Cottonwood Gulch Camp from other adventure programs is the opportunity to create a personalized legacy project. With guidance from professional staff, campers can silversmith their own turquoise bracelet, make a star chart of the night sky, restore burrowing owl habitat, reconstruct an 800-year-old pot, or even build a new chicken coop for the camp's organic farm! Cottonwood Gulch Camp promises more than just a summer vacation; it offers an unforgettable journey through the heart of the Southwest, igniting curiosity, fostering new skills, and creating lasting memories.
