Overview

Camp Hess Kramer is located on a stunning seaside campus in Malibu, offering direct access to both the beach and the mountains—a rare setting that allows campers to explore tide pools, hiking trails, and woodland creeks. The program emphasizes inclusion and community; for more than 70 years, this Jewish-affiliated camp has provided a welcoming environment where each camper is supported, empowered, and challenged. A wide range of activities ensures that everyone finds their niche, from arts and crafts, theatre, and music to ropes courses, climbing walls, archery, swimming, and athletics. Younger campers participate in introductory rotations and electives, while older campers engage in leadership development and more advanced specialty programs. Spiritual life and Jewish tradition are woven into the daily rhythm through Shabbat gatherings, song sessions, and reflective moments.

The camp’s facilities include bunk cabins, dining halls, and activity spaces designed for both comfort and adventure. Campers are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones — whether by trying new activities, forming new friendships, or deepening their sense of Jewish identity. Many staff members are former campers, bringing warmth, experience, and continuity to the community. Financial aid and first-time camper grants help make the experience accessible to families of all backgrounds. With its breathtaking location, rich history, and spirit of inclusion, Camp Hess Kramer continues to offer an unforgettable summer filled with growth, connection, and joy.

Accommodation and Meals

Accommodation

Campers at Wilshire Boulevard Temple Camps stay in well-designed dormitory quads that create a comfortable cabin-like environment. Each quad houses up to four rooms of about three campers per room, along with one counselor, and all rooms open into a shared common space. A typical unit includes 8–13 campers and 2–3 counselors. Rooms have convenient storage such as cubbies, closets, or shelves, and many feature beautiful ocean or nature views. About half of the quads include bathrooms accessible directly from the living area, while the others share larger facilities between two quads. Counselors live in the same area as campers to ensure constant supervision and to strengthen the sense of community. The setup offers a safe, cozy, and friendly space that helps campers feel at home while enjoying their summer adventure.

Meals

Meals at camp are kosher-style, meaning no pork or shellfish are served, and dairy and meat are kept separate. The dining program accommodates a wide variety of dietary needs including vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, gluten-free, and allergy-sensitive options. Meals are served family-style in the communal dining hall, where campers and staff eat together, share stories, and enjoy a strong sense of community. The menu is varied, nutritious, and designed to keep campers energized and satisfied throughout their busy days. Eating together is a joyful and social part of camp life, filled with laughter, song, and friendship.

Medicine

The camp maintains a fully equipped health center that is always staffed by at least two licensed nurses. A pediatric emergency physician is available on call through telehealth to ensure prompt access to expert care. The camp uses a safe medication packaging and dispensing system to ensure accuracy and compliance for prescribed medications. Common over-the-counter medicines such as pain relievers, antihistamines, and stomach aids are also available as needed. Health and wellness are a top priority, and the medical staff work closely with families to provide individualized care and attention.

Security

The camp operates within a closed, gated facility with carefully monitored entry points and 24/7 security personnel on site. Only authorized visitors are allowed through the main gate, and staff and campers are easily identified through badges or wristbands. The campus includes surveillance systems, emergency procedures, and staff training to ensure readiness and prevention. Campers are supervised at all times, whether in cabins, during activities, or while moving between areas. These comprehensive safety measures help create a secure and peaceful environment where campers can focus on learning, playing, and growing.

Camp Traditions

Camp Hess Kramer is rich with traditions that foster spirit, joy, and belonging. Shabbat celebrations, song sessions, color wars, campfires, and leadership moments are among the highlights that bring the community together. Many of these traditions have been passed down for generations, making each summer a blend of cherished history and fresh experiences. The “camp family” spirit is central — returning campers and staff help keep the culture alive through shared songs, stories, and rituals. Rooted in Jewish values, the traditions celebrate creativity, kindness, and community. These experiences build lifelong friendships and memories that continue long after camp ends.
