Inspiring Girls Expeditions: Girls on Ice offers high school girls a transformative, tuition-free wilderness science program in Alaska’s breathtaking landscapes. This unique 12-day expedition combines scientific exploration, artistic expression, and mountaineering on the Gulkana Glacier in the Eastern Alaska Range. Guided by a team of glaciologists, ecologists, artists, and mountaineers, participants engage in hands-on field studies while building confidence, leadership skills, and a deeper connection to the natural world. Each summer, two teams of nine girls embark on this unforgettable journey. Activities include hiking through alpine meadows, observing icefalls, spotting wildlife like caribou, and traversing snow-covered glaciers. Participants also learn about the glacier’s ecosystem through scientific lenses and artistic perspectives, fostering both intellectual curiosity and creative thinking. The program emphasizes environmental stewardship while creating a supportive environment for personal growth. The Gulkana Glacier, known as *C'ulc'ena' Łuu'* or "cutting stream glacier" in the Ahtna language, serves as an inspiring backdrop. Participants explore this traditional Ahtna land while observing its dramatic glacial streams and unique alpine features. Inspiring Girls Expeditions welcomes girls aged 16-18 from diverse backgrounds, prioritizing those who may have faced barriers to accessing science or outdoor programs.
