Kidwings Nature School Summer Camp is a nature-based outdoor day camp for children ages 4 to 11. The camp is built around the forest school model, with nature serving as the main classroom. Instead of a fixed indoor setting, campers rotate through natural spaces in central San Diego, with exact locations shared after registration.
The camp’s atmosphere is playful, earthy, and child-led. Kids spend time outdoors creating, building, playing, discovering, observing, and connecting with peers. The program blends nature exploration, art, science, mindfulness, movement, social-emotional learning, and unstructured play. The camp also emphasizes time away from screens, giving children space to use their imagination and work with natural materials.
Each summer week has a theme. Campers may become junior naturalists, explore art in nature, study biology and ecosystems, learn about marine life, build forts, play in mud kitchens, practice survival skills, or join wellness and empowerment activities. This gives families several different ways to match the camp to a child’s interests.
Kidwings is likely best for children who are curious, active, and comfortable outdoors. Younger campers may enjoy imaginative themes, fairy gardens, art, nature walks, and sensory play. Older campers may be drawn to survival skills, science, coastal exploration, fort building, and teamwork-based challenges.

Kidwings Nature School Summer Camp is a day camp. It does not include overnight lodging, cabins, dorm rooms, or residential supervision. Campers attend during the day and return home after the camp session.
The regular summer camp schedule runs Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. An extra hour is offered from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Optional Friday camp days are also available from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The camp uses a nomadic outdoor model. Instead of staying in one classroom or building, campers rotate locations daily within the central San Diego area. Possible settings include parks, open spaces, beaches, lakes, canyons, farms, community gardens, and historic places. Exact locations are shared with enrolled families.
Because pick-up and drop-off locations may vary by day, families should be prepared for a more flexible routine than that of a standard campus-based day camp.
Campers need to bring food from home. The packing list asks families to send a healthy, high-energy snack, a brown bag lunch, and a water bottle. Children are also expected to arrive with a full stomach and to have used the bathroom before leaving home.
The daily rhythm includes a snack and a water break in the morning. Campers also have a picnic-style lunch brought from home, followed by free play. The regular program schedule includes hand washing, water breaks, bathroom breaks, and sunscreen reapplication during the day.
Kidwings describes safety as a mix of clear limits, trust, outdoor awareness, and adult supervision. Children are taught not to lose sight of their educators and not to leave an area without warning. Educators evaluate new sites before children explore them, using health and safety criteria.
The camp allows age-appropriate risk, such as climbing, jumping, carrying logs and branches, and exploring natural spaces. This is treated as part of learning, not as random rough play. Children are encouraged to understand their own limits, fears, and abilities while being guided by adults.
Educators carry a first aid kit and a mobile phone. In rare cases of extreme weather, such as lightning storms, severe wind, or heavy rain, class may be canceled and credit issued. For ordinary wet or cold weather, the camp expects children to come dressed for outdoor conditions.
Kidwings Nature School Summer Camp is built around themed outdoor weeks. Each week gives campers a different way to explore nature, from science and marine life to survival skills, art, fairy gardens, forts, mud kitchens, and wellness. The camp also includes repeated core activities such as nature walks, observation, free play, creative work, movement, mindfulness, and group reflection. The program is designed for children who learn best by doing, touching, testing, wondering, and playing outside.
