Mark Day School Summer Programs

Mark Day School Summer Programs

San Rafael, CA, USA

Overview

Children can choose among three distinct summer experiences on the Mark Day School campus. Summer Tinkering is a five-day, hands-on building program for ages 7–13. Campers work with real tools, design large-scale wooden creations, and collaborate around a surprise weekly theme. Mountain Camp Marin serves rising kindergarten through eighth grade with a day-camp program centered on outdoor fun, creativity, personal growth, and camper choice. Early Learners is reserved for incoming Mark Day School kindergarteners and gives children time to become familiar with their new campus, classmates, and school routine through play, art, singing, and dancing.

The programs share a school-campus setting but follow different structures. Summer Tinkering emphasizes designing, making, persistence, and teamwork with guidance from Mark Day faculty and staff. Mountain Camp Marin includes activities such as archery, LARPing, arts and crafts, music, and swimming, and describes a tech-free environment where campers can choose activities and build skills over multiple weeks. Early Learners uses a developmentally appropriate day-camp format led by a Mark Day teacher with other teachers and interns. Families can select the program that best matches a child’s age, interests, and desired level of independence while staying within a daytime summer schedule. All three offerings take place at Mark Day School in San Rafael.

Program

Mark Day School’s summer lineup is organized as three separate daytime programs. Summer Tinkering runs in week-long sessions built around a surprise theme. Campers ages 7–13 design and construct large-scale projects from wood while using real tools. The program is student-centered and asks participants to experiment, learn from mistakes, build collaboratively, and stretch beyond their usual effort under the guidance of Mark Day faculty and staff.

Mountain Camp Marin serves rising kindergarten through eighth grade. Campers are grouped largely by school grade, and activity offerings rotate from week to week while core Badge Program activities remain consistent so returning campers can continue building skills. The program emphasizes outdoor fun, creativity, personal growth, a tech-free environment, and opportunities for campers to choose activities during the day. Early Learners is a separate program for incoming Mark Day kindergarteners. Led by teacher Lisa Becker with other Mark Day teachers and interns, it uses indoor and outdoor play, art projects, singing, dancing, and school routines to help children become familiar with the campus and future classmates. Families may enroll in multiple Early Learners weeks, with scheduling flexibility described by the school.

Campers who do not purchase the lunch plan should arrive with an adequate packed lunch each day. Safety

Mountain Camp Marin publishes several practical rules for daily supervision and pickup. An authorized person other than a legal guardian may pick up a camper when they have the camp’s Day Camper Pick-Up Placard. Families are asked to submit a Camper Adjustment Request Form when a child will arrive late, leave early, or miss a day so staff can prepare. The packing guidance requires closed-toed shoes, recommends sunscreen and a reusable water bottle, and asks swimming participants to bring appropriate pool gear. The program also describes a tech-free environment and asks campers to leave electronic devices at home. These published procedures are specific to Mountain Camp Marin; the saved sources do not provide equivalent safety procedures for Summer Tinkering or Early Learners.

Staff

Summer Tinkering is led by Tatian Greenleaf and David St. Martin and is described as operating under the guidance of caring, experienced Mark Day faculty and staff. Mountain Camp Marin lists Mario Del Cueto as camp director. Early Learners is led by Mark Day teacher Lisa Becker with other Mark Day teachers and interns. The saved official sources identify these leaders and staff groups but do not publish a staff-to-camper ratio or a general set of staff credentials for all three summer programs.

Communication

Mountain Camp Marin says email is its primary parent communication channel during camp, with text messages also used for reminders and updates. Families who need to reach a child during the camp day can call the camp office. The program also posts updates through its social media channels. The saved official sources do not describe an equivalent during-camp communication process for Summer Tinkering or Early Learners.

Logistics

Mountain Camp Marin offers optional extended care before and after the regular camp day, with a separate extended period for younger Cub Camp participants. Families may authorize another pickup person by using the Day Camper Pick-Up Placard. Late arrival, early pickup, or a missed day should be reported through the Camper Adjustment Request Form. Campers are asked to bring a reusable water bottle, closed-toed shoes, and sunscreen; those planning to swim should also bring a swimsuit, towel, and suitable goggles. A packed lunch is needed when the optional catered lunch plan is not purchased. The saved sources do not publish comparable logistics for the other Mark Day summer offerings.
