North Carolina State University: Young Writers Workshop

North Carolina State University: Young Writers Workshop

Raleigh, NC, USA

Overview

The NC State University Young Writers Workshop is a two-week, non-residential summer program designed to inspire and nurture the creative talents of young writers aged 10–14, entering grades 5–8. Held on weekday afternoons on NC State’s campus, this workshop is one of the oldest and most affordable programs of its kind in the nation, offering young participants a chance to develop their writing skills in a supportive and engaging environment. Students can choose from an array of courses tailored to different writing interests, including poetry, fiction, dramatic writing (playwriting or screenwriting), and genre fiction (such as sci-fi, fantasy, and mystery). Each participant selects their top three course preferences and is placed in two classes, ensuring a personalized experience. Workshops focus on essential techniques like character development, world-building, dialogue crafting, plot construction, and poetic forms. With small class sizes (no more than 12 students per group), participants receive individualized attention from skilled instructors who are passionate about fostering creativity. Beyond the classroom, the program offers unique opportunities to meet working authors and learn from their experiences. Students may even win copies of published books during these sessions. The workshop concludes with a celebratory reading event where participants share their work and receive a printed anthology featuring their creations. For families with financial concerns, the program provides generous need-based scholarships to make this enriching experience accessible to all. Whether your child dreams of becoming a novelist, poet, or screenwriter—or simply wants to explore creative expression—the Young Writers Workshop is an excellent stepping stone into the world of writing. It’s a place where imaginations soar, friendships form, and young voices find their rhythm.
