The Writers Room – Torrance is a creative writing camp focused on screenwriting and collaborative storytelling. Inspired by professional television writers’ rooms, the program teaches campers how scripts are developed from concept to final draft.
Campers begin by brainstorming ideas as a group. They learn how to shape story concepts, develop strong characters, and build structured plots. Instructors guide them through key storytelling elements such as conflict, pacing, dialogue, and scene construction. The atmosphere is interactive and energetic. Everyone participates, and ideas are shared openly.
This camp is ideal for elementary and middle school students who enjoy writing, acting, filmmaking, or creative thinking. It especially appeals to kids who love movies, streaming series, or animated shows and want to understand how scripts are written. Because the format is collaborative, it works well for children who enjoy group discussion and creative teamwork.
The focus is on building confidence and understanding structure. Campers move step by step through the writing process. By the end of the session, they have created original scripted material and gained real insight into how professional storytelling works.

The Writers Room – Torrance is a day camp, which means campers return home each afternoon. There is no overnight stay or residential housing associated with this program.
Campers spend their day in supervised indoor classroom spaces designed for writing, discussion, and collaboration. Groups are organized by age to create a comfortable and productive learning environment. Throughout the day, instructors lead structured sessions, and campers remain with their assigned group.
Because it’s a day camp, children can enjoy a focused, creative experience while maintaining their normal evening routines at home. This format works especially well for kids who are not ready for overnight camp or who prefer sleeping in their own bed. It also allows families to stay connected daily while campers build writing skills and creative confidence during structured daytime sessions.
A highlight of The Writers Room experience is the pitch session. Campers present story ideas to their peers, explaining characters, settings, and plot arcs. This mirrors how professional writers pitch concepts in the entertainment industry.
Collaboration is another core tradition. Writers build stories together, offer feedback, and refine scripts as a team. Campers learn that revision is part of the creative process and that strong storytelling often comes from group input.
Many sessions conclude with a table read or script presentation. Hearing their words performed aloud helps campers feel proud of their work. It also reinforces that storytelling is meant to be shared.
These traditions help young writers see themselves as creative contributors, not just students completing assignments.
The Writers Room – Torrance introduces campers to screenwriting through hands-on instruction and collaboration. Each session starts with idea generation. Campers brainstorm genres, themes, and story concepts together.
Instructors then guide them through character development and plot structure. Campers outline episodes or short scripts and learn how to organize scenes effectively. Dialogue workshops help them write conversations that sound authentic and purposeful.
Collaboration drives the program. Writers build stories together, contribute plot twists, and offer suggestions to strengthen scenes. This approach encourages teamwork and creative confidence.
Revision is woven into the daily schedule. Campers refine drafts based on feedback from instructors and peers. The program often concludes with a table read or presentation of the final script, allowing campers to hear their work performed.
The result is a creative, structured experience that blends imagination with real storytelling techniques used in film and television.
