Days at Salty Grom revolve around learning in the water, with surfing practice paired with short lessons about the ocean. Campers start with check-in and orientation, review the day’s surf conditions and basic techniques, then break into age- and skill-appropriate groups for coached surf sessions. The program uses a 4:1 student-to-instructor ratio, scheduled sunscreen and water breaks, and equipment supplied for surfing activities.
The main Surf Camp serves ages 8–16 and focuses on basic and intermediate surfing skills. Instruction also covers oceanography, surf technique, etiquette, and practical awareness of current conditions. Younger campers ages 5–8 can join Sprouts, a beach-camp track that puts more emphasis on becoming comfortable around the ocean. Sprouts mixes one-on-one surf time with games, seashore exploration, gentle water play, extra breaks, and a modified educational curriculum.
Both programs run as daytime camp experiences at Bolsa Chica State Beach. The published daily rhythm includes two surf periods, a midmorning sunscreen and water break, and lunch before pickup. Families are asked to send water, a sack lunch unless they purchase the optional lunch, sunscreen, a towel, and dry clothes. The structure keeps the focus on active participation while still making room for education and recovery time. Friday programming includes a family day, a friendly contest, and an award ceremony with swag.
