San Diego Civic Youth Ballet Summer Camp is a ballet-focused day camp for young dancers ages 4–10. The program introduces children to dance through ballet, jazz, arts and crafts, and creative class activities. It is designed for younger campers who are curious about movement, music, performance, and the structure of a real dance class.
The camp atmosphere is small, supportive, and beginner-friendly. Each class has a maximum of 15 students, giving campers more personal attention than at a large recreation camp. Professional instructors guide children through age-appropriate dance activities while maintaining a friendly, encouraging atmosphere.
The younger age group, ages 4–6, attends morning sessions. The older age group, ages 7–10, attends afternoon sessions when offered. This split helps the camp match the pace, focus, and expectations to each child’s developmental stage. Younger dancers can explore movement and confidence in a shorter, gentler block. Older campers can handle a slightly more mature class rhythm.
The camp is a good fit for children who like music, movement, dress-up, energy, creative expression, and performing for family. It also works well as a first ballet-camp experience because the format is short, structured, and focused on discovery rather than pressure.

San Diego Civic Youth Ballet Summer Camp is a day camp. Campers attend their assigned morning or afternoon session and return home afterward. No overnight lodging, cabins, dorm rooms, hotel stays, or residential supervision are included.
The camp is organized in half-day sessions. Ages 4–6 attend from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Ages 7–10 attend from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM when the older group is offered. This structure gives young dancers a focused arts experience without the length of a full-day camp.
The program takes place in person in Balboa Park. Campers spend their time in a ballet school environment connected to classical dance training and youth performance. Families should plan for daily drop-off and pick-up based on the selected session time.
This is a specialty dance camp, not a general summer childcare program. The day is built around dance, creativity, and a small in-studio performance.
The camp uses small class sizes, with a maximum of 15 students per camp group. This supports more individual attention and a calmer learning environment for young dancers. Campers work with professional, friendly instructors who guide the class through ballet, jazz, crafts, and performance preparation.
The age groups are separated into different session blocks. Younger campers ages 4–6 attend morning sessions, while older campers ages 7–10 attend afternoon sessions when offered. This helps the program better match activities to age, attention span, and movement ability.
The camp takes place in an established ballet school setting with a structured class format. Children are not moving through an open-play environment. They are participating in instructor-led dance and creative activities.
San Diego Civic Youth Ballet has a long tradition of classical ballet training, youth performance, and community dance education in Balboa Park. Summer Camp reflects that identity in a child-friendly way. Campers get a short, accessible introduction to dance while still feeling connected to a real ballet school.
The in-studio performance is the clearest camp tradition. At the end of each camp, dancers share their new skills with family and friends. For many young children, this may be their first performance moment in a ballet setting. It gives the week a clear finish without turning the experience into a high-pressure production.
The camp also carries a discovery-based rhythm. Children explore ballet, jazz, art, movement, music, and creative expression. They make friends, learn class routines, practice listening to instructors, and build confidence through repetition.
The mood is simple: learn a little dance, make something creative, enjoy the studio, and take a small bow at the end.
San Diego Civic Youth Ballet Summer Camp introduces children to dance through a mix of ballet, jazz, arts and crafts, and performance preparation. The program is designed for young dancers, so the emphasis is on discovery, confidence, and age-appropriate movement rather than strict pre-professional training.
Campers learn dance basics in a studio setting. They practice moving with music, following instructor cues, working in a small group, and building comfort with ballet-style class structure. Jazz adds another movement style, giving the week more variety.
Arts and crafts give campers a creative break from physical activity. This helps younger children reset during the session and makes the camp feel more playful. The week ends with an in-studio performance for family and friends, where campers can share what they learned.
For older and more serious dancers, San Diego Civic Youth Ballet also offers separate summer ballet intensives. Those are full-day programs with daily ballet technique and additional dance or conditioning classes, but they are separate from the ages 4–10 summer camp.
