Meals
Special Camp provides lunch for at least two days per session and includes a camp t-shirt as part of the session package. According to their resources page, some meals or refreshments are included in the tuition structure, although families may need to provide additional snacks or food depending on the daily schedule.
Safety
Safety at Special Camp is a core priority, supported by the 1:1 camper-to-counselor ratio and staff training. Counselors undergo a full-day training seminar before the summer season, where they learn about individual learning needs, communication strategies, and compassionate behavior management. The staff also prepare for common medical and behavioral scenarios, ensuring they can support each camper’s emotional and physical well-being throughout the week.
Health & Medicine
Special Camp has a registered nurse on its staff who helps oversee campers’ health needs. Parents submit detailed medical and health forms before camp begins, and staff coordinate with them to handle medications and common health concerns. The camp’s model supports campers with developmental, emotional or medical needs with dignity and individualized care.
Camp traditions
Friendship and connection lie at the heart of Special Camp’s traditions. Every counselor is deeply paired with a single camper, fostering bonds that often last beyond the summer. Activities include regular social games, community-building experiences, praise ceremonies, and large-group events that celebrate campers’ achievements. The strong emphasis on relationships—heart to heart, “friend to friend”—creates a camp culture where empathy, joy and belonging are central.
