Imagine a summer week spent designing, making, experimenting, and exploring a science museum from the inside. At CAMP at The Tech Interactive, children entering grades 2 through 6 take on hands-on STEM challenges in downtown San Jose. Rather than focusing only on one subject, the camp connects science, technology, engineering, art, and math through collaborative projects. Campers investigate questions, try out ideas, and create original work inspired by their session’s theme. They also explore exhibits that invite them to discover how things work through direct interaction.
The camp takes place at The Tech Interactive, with activities in museum galleries, classrooms, and theater spaces. Hands-on science and engineering work is balanced with group games, breaks, and opportunities to get to know other campers. Selected exhibit experiences can take place when the museum is closed to the public, giving the camp a distinctive way to use its setting. Some activities and breaks take place outdoors, including supervised time in nearby outdoor spaces.
Children who enjoy building, testing ideas, discovering science, or working on creative challenges may find plenty to explore here. Projects are designed for elementary-age campers and give them ways to approach problems together. The program combines the structure of a weeklong camp with the unusual opportunity to learn through the exhibits and spaces of a working interactive science center.

Each camp session runs for a week and centers on a theme that inspires its collaborative projects. Children use science, technology, engineering, art, and math to investigate big ideas and put their thinking into action. Instead of just hearing about a concept, they can work with materials, test solutions, and make something of their own. Engineering design and real-world problem solving are central to the experience, while the theme provides a shared direction for the group.
Camp activities are based at The Tech Interactive, where children move between hands-on work and opportunities to explore museum exhibits. Galleries, classrooms, and theater spaces are part of the setting. Campers can also take part in science activities, group games, and supervised outdoor breaks. The program includes special opportunities to experience exhibits during times when the museum is not open to general visitors. Optional IMAX viewing is another part of the camp experience; children who prefer not to watch a film can take part in a supervised alternative.
The week is designed for students entering grades 2 through 6. Campers tackle creative tasks with others, share ideas, and explore the results of different approaches. Alongside the STEM focus, the camp includes familiar summer-camp moments such as games, breaks, and time to connect with peers. This combination of themed making and exploration distinguishes it from a single-subject classroom course.
Families can pack lunch and a snack for their camper or arrange an optional weekly lunch order through The Tech Cafe after registration. Lunch is not included automatically in the camp fee. The camp is nut-aware, so food brought from home should not contain peanuts or tree nuts. The museum cannot guarantee a completely nut-free environment, and staff take precautions to reduce exposure.
Campers have scheduled snack and lunch breaks under staff supervision. A reusable water bottle is encouraged, and refill stations are available. Registered families receive information about enrolling in the optional cafe lunch program and its weekly menus.
Camp staff supervise the designated drop-off and pick-up area. Families receive detailed instructions about timing, entrances, approved pickup policies, and check-in arrangements before their session. If a child needs to arrive late or leave early, the camp asks families to communicate the change in advance.
Staff supervise snack and lunch breaks and any outdoor portions of the program. The camp uses a nut-aware food policy, asking families not to send foods containing peanuts or tree nuts while acknowledging that the wider museum cannot be guaranteed completely nut-free. Adult camp staff are trained in First Aid, including EpiPen use, and are CPR certified.
During registration, families complete health and participation forms through Smartwaiver. Those forms allow families to share allergies, medical needs, accommodations, and other information that may affect a child’s participation. Additional context can also be communicated directly to the camp team.
Adult camp staff have First Aid training that includes EpiPen use, and they hold CPR certification. The camp’s nut-aware policy asks families not to send peanut or tree-nut foods. Because the science center welcomes other visitors, the setting is not guaranteed to be completely nut-free.
Adult CAMP staff are trained in First Aid, including how to use an EpiPen, and are CPR certified. Staff supervise campers in museum spaces and during outdoor activities, as well as at designated drop-off and pickup points. Campers have staff supervision during scheduled snack and lunch breaks.
Counselors support hands-on activities and collaborative projects throughout the camp week. Families can share important participation details and accommodations with the team through required registration forms and direct communication.
Families receive camp arrival information before their session, including check-in and pickup directions, procedures, and approved pickup arrangements. Registration also provides a way to share health needs, allergies, and accommodations through electronic forms.
For a late arrival, early pickup, or other schedule change, parents are asked to contact the camp team as early as possible. They can also share additional context about their child’s needs directly with the team.
