Surfing is the center of the day at Stone Steps in Leucadia, where campers learn how to handle a board, understand the ocean, and spend meaningful time practicing in the water. Instruction covers the basic fundamentals of surfing along with ocean awareness, beach safety, surfing etiquette, and the basics of contest surfing. Coaches work with different ability levels, and the program emphasizes individual feedback rather than a one-size-fits-all lesson.
Campers get repeated chances to surf, with extra practice time built into the experience. The program also includes boogie-boarding time, competition relays, team-building games, and endurance and strengthening relays. These activities add variety between surf instruction while keeping the focus on water skills and active participation. The standard summer camp maintains a 3:1 instructor-to-student ratio, and supervision is provided throughout camp.
The program is a strong fit for kids and teens who want hands-on surf instruction, enjoy active beach days, or are ready to build confidence around waves and ocean conditions. Younger beginners also have a separate introductory Rippersnapper option with a 1:1 ratio. Soft surfboards are provided, wetsuits are available on request, and shade plus sports drink and water are available during camp.

The camp combines practical surf coaching with short daily learning topics about the ocean. Campers work on the basic fundamentals of surfing and receive coaching suited to their current level. The program gives them additional time to practice riding waves, and instructors remain focused on each surfer’s individual needs. The standard summer camp uses a 3:1 instructor-to-student ratio, while the introductory Rippersnapper camp for younger participants is listed at 1:1.
Each day also includes instruction in ocean awareness, beach safety, surfing etiquette, and the basics of contest surfing. Active group elements include competition relays, team-building games, and endurance and strengthening relays. Campers also have free time to boogie board and enjoy the water, so the session mixes coached skill work with supervised recreational water time.
Morning and afternoon blocks are offered, with each standard block lasting three hours. Camp equipment and comfort support are part of the setup: soft surfboards are provided, wetsuits can be requested, shade is available for sun protection, and sports drink and water are available for hydration. The overall structure stays centered on supervised surf instruction and repeated practice at the beach.
Supervision is maintained throughout summer surf camp, and safety instruction is built into the daily curriculum through ocean awareness and beach-safety topics. Surfing etiquette is also taught as part of the program. The camp’s staff page describes a standing summer-camp practice of having an off-duty firefighter, lifeguard, or certified EMT on the premises. Surfin Fire also employs firefighters, lifeguards, EMTs, and skilled surfers and watermen and waterwomen with CPR/First Aid certification. Owner Jon Peterson’s background includes service with the Encinitas Fire Department, CPR/First Aid teaching certification, and swift-water rescue experience.
