The Susquehannock Camps

The Susquehannock Camps

Brackney, PA, USA

Overview

From the humble seedling of a teacher's aspiration, The Susquehannock Camps have grown into a flourishing tree of discovery and development for thousands of boys and girls around the globe. In 1905, an ambitious educator with a heart for athletics, George Carlton "King" Shafer, struck the first spark of the legacy that still shines brightly today. Initially, this trove of educational and recreational experiences began with just a smattering of boys, their eager faces reflected in the pristine waters of Pennsylvania's Tripp Lake. The mission of Susquehannock, steeped in a tradition of academia and athletics, continues on under the watchful eye of an intimately devoted board of directors since 2001, proving the phrase "it takes a village" to be more than just an adage but rather, the camp’s anthem. Alumni and past parents form the bedrock of this board, demonstrating the longevity and impact of King's vision. Shafer blood still pulses thrummingly through the camp's veins, even during the quiet "off season", a testament to the deep-seated family dedication. The desire for a girls' camp harbored in the hearts of the Shafer family became a reality, fittingly, on the heels of competition. Camp Choconut for Boys, a once competitor in tennis and baseball, located at Lake Choconut, set the stage for the unveiling of Susquehannock for Girls in 1986. The tradition of ingenuity was mirrored beautifully as the "sister" camp echoed its inception with the same structure: pioneering campers and zealous counselors, including some alumni's kin, ready to embrace the beckoning call of discovery.
