Tucker-Maxon School Camp

Tucker-Maxon School Camp

Portland, OR, USA

Overview

Founded on the visionary dreams of a dedicated father and powered by the unwavering belief of an empathetic educator, the Tucker-Maxon School celebrates over seventy years of innovation in teaching and commitment to the learning journeys of its students. Initially carved out of a converted bedroom in the home of Paul Boley, a Harvard-bred legal scholar, this lantern of learning had humble origins, stemming from the deeply personal endeavor to provide his 18-month old daughter, fated to navigate the world sans sound, the chance at a 'normal' life. The story refuses to end there, as Alice Maxon, a champion of the philosophy 'deaf children can talk', tethered her fortunes with Boley's, flagging off a stunning partnership predicated on hope and resilience. Their maiden forge? A small school in Portland, a cozy haven, where whispers of optimism and laughter echoed off its walls, embracing kids who could not hear and rewarding them with the power of speech. Morphing over the decades from its simple beginnings to a private boarding school in the '60s and '70s, the Tucker-Maxon School demonstrates the profound adaptability that only comes with steadfast commitment. An affirmation of the worth of every child is endowed here - deaf and hearing alike are instilled with a sense of the weight of listening and spoken language that they can carry with them, a lifetime compass. Within the bounds of the top-ranking school in the nation, lies the enduring spirit of cooperation and contribution that defines Tucker-Maxon. True to it's raison d'être, it continues to teach deaf children the delights of speech, laughter, and even how to serenade the world with their voices. It's about more than just learning - it's about experiencing life in full.
