Embark on a fascinating journey into the world of meteorology with the UNC Asheville Pre-College Program's Summer Intensive. This immersive program, running from June 23 to June 28, 2024, offers high school students a unique opportunity to explore the fundamental principles of atmospheric sciences through engaging, hands-on experiences. Explore the Atmosphere Students will delve into the intricacies of meteorology by studying the relationship between pressure, temperature, and elevation in the picturesque mountains of North Carolina. The program includes building a research-quality weather station and conducting small experiments to understand meteorological principles such as air density and atmospheric pressure. Real-World Experience Participants will visit the National Centers for Environmental Information and other key weather stations to gain insights into professional meteorology careers. A highlight of the program is the chance to become a broadcast meteorologist for a day, presenting forecasts in a real television studio. Comprehensive Curriculum The daily schedule is packed with educational activities: Morning: Start with breakfast followed by building a weather station. Afternoon: Engage in studies and field trips to deepen understanding of atmospheric science. Evening: Enjoy recreational activities like beach volleyball or attending an Asheville Tourists game. Program Details Cost: $1,580, covering lodging, meals, course materials, activities, and excursions. Eligibility: Open to rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Accommodation: Students reside in campus residence halls and dine in campus facilities. Registration: A $500 deposit is required upon registration, with the balance due by May 1, 2024.
