Overview

The four-star Pestana Berlin Tiergarten, part of the Portuguese hotel chain Pestana Hotels & Resorts, is located between Tiergarten Park and Berlin Zoo. This location makes it extremely convenient for families with young children, especially if you don't need an in-room kitchen. The quiet neighbourhood, windows overlooking the green park, wooden floors, the possibility of a cot, hypoallergenic beds and bathtubs with hygienic showers in some rooms are almost ideal substitutes for a home environment.

The buffet breakfast is equally convenient, ending at 11am instead of 10am at weekends. You'll get an extra discount if you reserve a place at the buffet in the evening. The classic German menu includes fresh pastries and croissants, yoghurt, various cereals and sausages. If you want to eat outside the hotel, you'll have to walk to the nearest public square, such as Wittenbergplatz.

And with the picturesque zoo and large park, you may be spoilt for choice if you want to rent a bike and ride around. The Brandenburg Gate and Potsdamer Platz are just half an hour away on foot. And with public transport stops right outside the hotel, you can reach the rest of the sights without having to take a taxi.

A visit to Europe's largest shopping centre, KaDeWe, not far from the Pestana Berlin Tiergarten, is a great way to finish your city break.

Directions

Pestana Berlin Tiergarten is located opposite the northern embassies in Berlin, between Tiergarten Park and Berlin Zoo. It is 19 km from Berlin Brandenburg Airport.

The best way to get from Schönefeld to the embassy area is to take the S-Bahn (RB14 branch line: Nauen, Bahnhof) and change at Alexanderplatz to bus 200 towards the Zoo. When you get to the Corneliusbrücke stop, you will need to walk back a bit to get to the hotel door.

There are several ways to get from the main train station to the northern embassies. The easiest way for tourists with luggage to get there is to take the S5 line toward Spandau Bhf near the station, get off at the Zoo (Zoologischer Garten Bhf) and take the 200 bus for the rest of the distance.

If the journey by public transport is uncomfortable, it is best to take a taxi.

Pestana Berlin Tiergarten opened in 2011 and occupies a 6-storey building with 142 rooms in various categories. All rooms are decorated in a modern, urban style with hypoallergenic materials, partly with balconies. As well as large opening windows in the living areas, there are additional windows to the outside in the bathrooms. Connecting rooms are available:

Comfort room, 25 sqm, with a large single or two double beds, work desk with glass top, armchair and coffee table in the lounge area. The bathroom has a bathtub with hygienic shower and a rain shower. Maximum occupancy for 2 people.

Executive room, 25-28 sqm, with access to a private balcony, large single bed or two twin beds, work and lounge area, coffee machine and complimentary daily beverage service. The bathroom has a bathtub has a hygienic shower and a rain shower, bathrobes and slippers. Maximum occupancy is 2 guests.

Suite, on the top floor, of 50 sqm, with separate sleeping and living areas and a private terrace overlooking the TV Tower, the Triumphal Column and the Cathedral. Food and Drink

Hotel guests can order a breakfast buffet, which is served between 6am and 30am in the Atlantis Restaurant on the ground floor of the building. The selection is typical of German hotels: sausages, eggs cooked in a variety of ways, various cereals, yoghurt, sweet and unsweetened pastries, fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables, hot drinks and juices. Breakfast is served later at weekends, ending at 11 o'clock, as opposed to 10 o'clock on weekdays. Breakfast must be booked from the evening before.

From midday, the restaurant serves an à la carte menu of German and Mediterranean dishes. During the warmer months, it's best to move your meal from the indoor lounge to the outdoor terrace. Business lunches are served until 14:30 on weekdays. In the evening, the Aqua Bar opens in the lounge, serving light snacks and a delicious cocktail or other beverage.

In the relatively 'non-touristy' area of the hotel, there is not an abundance of cafes and restaurants. However, it is only a 15-minute walk to Wittenbergplatz square, where there are plenty of places to eat and drink. The largest shopping centre, KaDeWe, is about half an hour's walk away and offers plenty of space for shopping and dining.

And with buses 106 and 200, it's easy to get to the more distant embassies and popular attractions of the historic district, which are just steps away from the Pestana Berlin Tiergarten.
