Overview

Camp Hazen YMCA is a nonprofit overnight and day camp in Connecticut located on 170 wooded acres along Cedar Lake in Chester. For more than 100 years, Camp Hazen has provided young people with opportunities to grow through outdoor adventure, community living, and meaningful friendships in a supportive camp environment.

Our summer program centers on a traditional overnight camp experience where campers live in small cabin groups with caring, well-trained counselors who guide them through daily activities, challenges, and camp traditions. Campers build independence and confidence while becoming part of a close-knit community that encourages kindness, teamwork, and personal growth.

Each day at camp offers a wide range of activities that allow campers to explore their interests and try new things. Programs include swimming and boating on Cedar Lake, creative arts, nature exploration, archery, tennis, basketball, skate park, climbing, high ropes, and zipline. Evening programs and camp-wide events bring the entire community together for games, campfires, and traditions that create lasting memories.

Camp Hazen also offers a day camp program designed for families who live locally in the surrounding Connecticut communities. Day campers spend full days at camp participating in many of the same activities and traditions as overnight campers, becoming part of the same welcoming camp environment while returning home in the evening.

As part of the YMCA, Camp Hazen is committed to making camp accessible to families from a wide range of backgrounds. We offer tiered pricing and financial assistance to ensure that cost is not a barrier for families who want their children to experience camp.

In addition to summer camp, Camp Hazen YMCA hosts youth weekends, family weekends, school programs, and outdoor education experiences throughout the year, helping young people stay connected to the outdoors and to the camp community.

Whether attending for the first time or returning year after year, campers leave Camp Hazen with stronger confidence, new skills, and friendships that last well beyond the summer.

Why We Love It

What we love most about Camp Hazen is the sense of community that forms when campers live, play, and grow together in the outdoors. Over the course of a session, friendships deepen, confidence grows, and campers discover new strengths in themselves. The combination of outdoor adventure, supportive counselors, and long-standing traditions creates an environment where young people feel a strong sense of belonging and excitement about being part of something bigger than themselves.

Best For

Camp Hazen YMCA is best for campers who want a classic, community-centered summer camp experience where they can try many different activities, build strong friendships, and feel part of a close-knit camp tradition. Our two-week sessions allow campers to settle into cabin life, develop skills in their chosen activities, and fully experience camp-wide events like the Hazen Series, Hazen Bowl, Olympics, and World Cup. It is especially well suited for kids who enjoy the outdoors, teamwork, and being part of an energetic camp community where everyone participates and contributes.

Accommodation and Meals

ACCOMMODATION

Campers live in small cabin groups with peers close to their age, creating a strong sense of community and belonging. Cabins are simple and comfortable, designed to provide a classic outdoor camp experience while staying close to nature. Each cabin group is supported by trained counselors who live with the campers and help them feel safe, supported, and part of a close-knit group throughout their stay.

MEALS

Meals are served family-style in our central dining hall, bringing the whole camp community together several times each day. Our kitchen prepares balanced meals with options that appeal to a wide range of tastes and dietary needs. Staff work closely with families to accommodate allergies and special diets so that every camper can eat safely and comfortably.

MEDICINE

The health and well-being of campers is supported by trained health staff in our on-site Health Lodge. Nurses provide first aid, manage medications, and monitor camper health throughout each session. Medications are securely stored and distributed according to the instructions provided by families and physicians.

SECURITY

Camper safety is a top priority at Camp Hazen YMCA. Staff receive extensive training in supervision, emergency procedures, and youth safety. Camp is a structured environment where counselors supervise campers at all times, and clear procedures are in place to ensure campers remain safe while exploring and enjoying the camp property.

CAMP TRADITIONS

Camp Hazen has more than a century of traditions that help build community and create lasting memories. Our two-week sessions feature large camp-wide competitions inspired by classic color wars, including the Hazen Series, Hazen Bowl, Olympics, and World Cup. These energetic events bring the entire camp together through team spirit, friendly competition, and shared traditions that campers look forward to year after year.

Facilities and services

Camp Hazen YMCA is situated on 170 acres of wooded land along Cedar Lake in Chester, Connecticut. The property includes camper cabins, program areas, and shared community spaces designed to support a wide range of outdoor and creative activities while maintaining a classic camp environment connected to nature.

The waterfront on Cedar Lake supports swimming, boating, and other water-based programs. Additional program facilities include spaces for creative arts, archery, tennis, basketball, climbing, high ropes, and zipline, along with fields and open areas used for group games and camp-wide events.

The center of camp features key community buildings including the dining hall, where the entire camp gathers for meals and announcements, and the Health Lodge, which provides medical care and support for campers. Trails and wooded areas throughout the property allow campers to explore the outdoors while staying within a well-organized and supervised camp environment.

Camp Hazen’s infrastructure is designed to balance safety, functionality, and connection to the outdoors, giving campers access to diverse activities while preserving the natural setting that defines the camp experience.

Activities Program

Camp Hazen’s daily schedule includes dedicated activity periods where campers participate in skill-based programs led by trained staff. These activity times are designed to give campers the chance to learn new skills, explore different interests, and gain confidence through hands-on experiences.

During our two-week sessions, campers choose and sign up for classes that they attend throughout the session. This allows them to build skills over time, work toward goals, and develop a deeper connection to the activity. Campers select from a wide range of options across our four primary program areas: Creative Arts, Outdoor Pursuits, Land Sports, and Water Sports. Creative Arts may include activities like arts and crafts or other hands-on creative projects. Outdoor Pursuits focuses on adventure and nature-based activities such as climbing or archery. Land Sports includes a variety of recreational sports like tennis, basketball, and skate park. Water Sports takes place on Cedar Lake and includes activities like swimming and boating.

In our one-week sessions, campers participate in activity bundles rather than individual class sign-ups. These bundles group several related activities together so campers can experience a variety of programs during their shorter stay while still building familiarity with staff and program areas.

In addition to the four skill-based program areas, campers also take part in a fifth program area focused on group development and adventure. During these periods, cabin groups work together on team-building initiatives and challenges that strengthen communication, trust, and cooperation. These activities often take place on our high ropes course and zipline, giving campers the opportunity to support one another while trying exciting new experiences as a group.

Together, these structured activity periods help campers discover new interests, build skills, and share meaningful experiences with their cabin group and the broader camp community.
