The Dance Academy Summer Intensive at the Colburn School is designed for students who are passionate about dance and ready to deepen their training. The atmosphere is professional yet encouraging, blending high standards with individualized attention. Dancers are challenged to refine technique, expand their movement vocabulary, and develop artistic awareness in a setting that values focus, respect, and growth.
The program centers on daily dance training across multiple styles, allowing students to strengthen fundamentals while exploring musicality, alignment, and performance quality. Classes are structured and progressive, helping dancers build endurance and confidence throughout the session. Faculty members guide students with clear feedback and mentorship, creating a learning environment that feels both demanding and supportive.
This intensive is best suited for ages 14–17, who already have dance experience and are motivated to train consistently. Younger participants benefit from structured instruction and strong technical foundations, while older dancers appreciate the pace, depth, and artistic challenge of the curriculum.
What sets this program apart is its conservatory-style approach within a summer setting. Dancers gain not only physical skills but also discipline, focus, and a deeper appreciation for the art form—making the experience valuable whether they are preparing for future training or simply want to grow as dancers.

The Colburn School places strong emphasis on creating a safe and respectful learning environment. Dance classes are taught by experienced instructors who closely monitor technique, spacing, and pacing to help reduce the risk of injury. Proper warm-ups and cool-downs are integrated into daily training to support physical well-being.
Studios are organized and supervised during all scheduled activities. Clear expectations around behavior, focus, and mutual respect help maintain both physical and emotional safety. Students are encouraged to listen to their bodies, communicate concerns, and approach training with care and awareness.
The Dance Academy Summer Intensive builds a sense of community through shared routines and studio culture. Days often begin with technique-focused classes that set the tone for disciplined, mindful training.
As the session progresses, dancers become familiar with class structures, musical styles, and teaching approaches, creating a rhythm that fosters confidence and growth. Informal studio moments — such as shared breaks or group discussions — help foster connection among participants.
End-of-session showings or reflections give dancers a chance to recognize their progress and celebrate hard work. These traditions help make the experience memorable and meaningful.
The activities program at the Colburn School Dance Academy Summer Intensive is built around concentrated dance training that supports technical growth and artistic development. Students participate in multiple classes each day, allowing them to refine skills through repetition, feedback, and practice. The pace is purposeful and immersive, helping dancers stay engaged and focused.
Technique classes emphasize alignment, strength, flexibility, and musicality. Dancers are guided to understand not just how to move, but why movement choices matter. Additional classes explore performance quality, dynamics, and expression, encouraging dancers to connect technique with artistry.
The program also allows students to experience different teaching styles and approaches, broadening their perspectives and adaptability. Breaks are built into the day to support rest and recovery, helping dancers sustain energy across the session.
Room and board are available only to students ages 15 and above. Parents/guardians may not stay in the dorms.
