Colburn Guitar Intensive is a specialized summer program designed for students who already have guitar experience and want to take their playing to the next level. Organized by Colburn School, the intensive emphasizes serious musical study in a supportive, conservatory-style environment.
The atmosphere is focused yet encouraging. Students spend their days immersed in individual practice, group instruction, and performance-based learning. The program centers on classical guitar, with strong attention to technique, tone production, musical interpretation, and repertoire development. Rather than rushing through material, students are encouraged to slow down, listen carefully, and build strong habits that support long-term growth.
This program is best suited for older elementary, middle, and high school–aged students who already read music and are comfortable playing independently. It also appeals to teens who are considering more advanced music study in the future and want to experience what an intensive training environment feels like. Students benefit not only from expert instruction, but also from being surrounded by peers who share similar goals, curiosity, and dedication to music.

Colburn Guitar Intensive is a day program. There is no overnight stay, and students return home at the end of each day. All activities take place on site, within the Colburn School’s professional music facilities.
The location is designed for focused music study, with dedicated classrooms, practice rooms, and performance spaces. The environment is quiet, structured, and well suited for students who need space to concentrate, practice, and work closely with instructors throughout the day.
Meals are not provided as part of the program. The presence of the Colburn Cafe on site adds convenience for students.
The program takes place in a controlled, professional educational setting. Students remain within the Colburn School facilities throughout the day and are supervised during scheduled activities.
Clear daily routines help maintain an organized environment, and staff members are present to guide students between instruction, practice sessions, and breaks. The setting supports a calm, focused atmosphere appropriate for serious music study.
As a day program, basic health needs are handled on site with care and attention. Staff are prepared to respond to minor issues and provide basic first aid if needed.
Families are encouraged to share relevant medical information in advance so instructors and staff can support individual needs appropriately. Breaks are built into the day to allow students to rest their hands, refocus, and manage physical comfort during extended practice periods.
Colburn Guitar Intensive reflects the Colburn School’s long-standing tradition of high-level music education. A core value of the program is mentorship—students learn directly from experienced musicians who model professionalism, discipline, and respect for the art form.
Another important tradition is performance. Students are encouraged to share their work with others, whether in informal studio settings or more structured performance opportunities. These moments help build confidence, focus, and the ability to perform under gentle pressure.
Equally important is the culture of mutual respect. Participants learn to listen to one another, give and receive feedback, and grow together as musicians. This shared commitment to music creates a strong sense of purpose and community throughout the program.
The activities program is built around immersive musical study and consistent practice. Students divide their time between individual practice, guided instruction, and collaborative learning, following a structured daily schedule that supports focus and progress.
Instruction emphasizes classical guitar technique, musical expression, and thoughtful interpretation of repertoire. Faculty work closely with students to refine fundamentals, address technical challenges, and strengthen overall musicianship. Group settings allow students to observe peers, learn from shared experiences, and gain new musical perspectives.
Performance and feedback are an important part of the experience. Students have opportunities to play for others and receive constructive guidance, helping them grow more confident and intentional in their playing. The overall program is focused, demanding, and rewarding, designed to support meaningful development over the course of the session.
Colburn Guitar Intensive is best suited for motivated students who are ready for a disciplined, music-centered summer experience. The program emphasizes depth, consistency, and artistic growth, making it a strong fit for young guitarists who want to build lasting skills rather than casual exposure.
