Fulcrum Surf School Summer Camp is a beginner surf camp for children starting at age 5. The program is designed for students who are new to surfing or still building their basic skills. Instead of placing campers in a large beach group with minimal feedback, the camp uses a 2:1 student-to-instructor ratio and AM camp sizes of about 4–6 students.
The camp focuses on more than simply standing up on a board. Campers learn ocean safety, board safety, surfing fundamentals, pop-ups, wave awareness, surf etiquette, basic turning, and how to set small, realistic goals after each session. Coaches provide individualized feedback and adjust goals based on each student’s progress.
Fulcrum Surf was founded in 2003 and offers surf instruction from beginner to advanced coaching. Its broader programs include surf lessons, private coaching, seasonal camps, after-school programs, Independent Surf PE, surf outings, and travel surf experiences.
This camp is best for kids who are comfortable at the beach, ready to listen closely around the ocean, and excited to try surfing in a structured setting. Younger beginners benefit from the close coach attention, while older beginners can use the camp as a clear foundation before moving into intermediate surf training.

Fulcrum Surf School Summer Camp is a day camp. Campers attend the AM surf session and return home afterward. No overnight lodging, cabins, dorm rooms, hotel stays, or residential supervision are included.
The camp is held at the beach, with drop-off and pick-up tied to the listed camp location. The camp information includes North County and South County drop-off options, and a current summer camp note also references Grandview Beach with coaches escorting students from the drop-off area to the Fulcrum tent. Families should confirm the active drop-off location before the first day.
The program is short and ocean-focused, not a full-day childcare camp. Campers arrive ready to surf, get fitted for wetsuits if needed, review safety and fundamentals, surf in small groups, take a snack and rehydration break, return to the water, and close with feedback and goal-setting.
The setting is open-air, sandy, and ocean-based. Campers should be prepared for sun, saltwater, sand, changing surf conditions, and beach routines.
Campers should bring extra or specific snacks if they want them. The daily camp schedule includes a rehydration and snack break after the first surf block.
A full lunch is not part of the regular AM camp schedule. The program is a short surf session rather than a full-day camp with a meal period. Families should send enough water and simple snacks for a beach morning, especially for younger campers who may need fuel after surfing.
Safety is one of the main teaching points at Fulcrum Surf School Summer Camp. Campers begin with check-in, ocean and board safety, surfing fundamentals, and wetsuit fitting before entering the water. The program uses a 2:1 student-to-instructor ratio, which gives each camper close attention during water time.
Monday’s instructional objectives focus on ocean safety. Campers learn how to identify rip currents, how to escape them, why head diving is not allowed, how to bend knees and arms when exiting the board, how to cover up when coming up for air, and why they should not paddle behind another surfer.
Surf etiquette is also taught. Campers learn right-of-way rules, look both ways before standing up, communicate when heading toward someone, and exit the board early to avoid collisions.
If surf conditions are too big or unsafe, the lesson is rescheduled. The camp operates in normal weather and surf conditions when safe.
Participation requires a release-of-liability waiver before a camper may join surf activities. The waiver states that the participant, or the legal guardian for a minor, confirms the camper is in good health and has no mental or physical condition that would prevent participation in surf activities.
Surfing involves physical exertion, ocean conditions, surfboards, wetsuits, waves, tides, currents, weather, and contact with the beach or ocean floor. Families should consider the child’s swimming ability, comfort in the ocean, stamina, and ability to follow directions before enrollment.
Campers should use sunscreen, bring a hat, and arrive prepared for a beach morning. A towel, sandals, and personal snacks are also recommended. Wetsuits may cause skin irritation for some children, so families with sensitive skin concerns should prepare accordingly.
Fulcrum Surf School Summer Camp teaches beginner surfers through a mix of safety instruction, direct water practice, beach breaks, and individualized feedback. Campers start with ocean and board safety, wetsuit fitting, and surfing fundamentals before going into the water. The small-group format gives each surfer repeated coaching attention.
The daily schedule includes a first surf block, then time to rehydrate, snack, reapply sunscreen, and play a beach game. Campers return to the water for more surfing before de-suiting, receiving feedback, and setting goals for the next day.
The weekly curriculum builds gradually. Campers learn rip current awareness, safe board handling, pop-ups, surf etiquette, reading waves and wind, and the basics of turning. By Friday, coaches review the week and assess each camper’s progress.
