Vertical Hold Rock Climbing Gym San Marcos offers Camp Vertical, an indoor climbing day camp for kids ages 8–13. The program is built for children who like physical challenges, but it is not only about strength. Climbing asks kids to think, plan, balance, focus, and keep trying when a route feels tricky.
Campers practice bouldering, top rope climbing, knot tying, belay basics, climbing technique, and safe falling. Activities are shaped around age and ability, so newer climbers can start with fundamentals while more confident climbers can keep challenging themselves. Experienced 7-year-old climbers may also be considered by contacting the camp team.
The camp has a practical, energetic gym atmosphere. Kids climb, play, problem-solve, and work with other campers throughout the week. Off-wall activities add variety, including crate stacking, team challenges, scavenger hunts, obstacle courses, crafts, and games.
This camp will likely appeal to kids who enjoy movement but may not be drawn to traditional team sports. A child does not need to be the fastest runner or strongest athlete to enjoy climbing. Patience, curiosity, and a willingness to try again matter just as much.

Vertical Hold Rock Climbing Gym San Marcos runs as a day camp. Campers come to the gym for their registered session and leave after camp ends. There are no overnight stays, cabins, dorms, or residential camp services.
Families can choose a full-day or half-day schedule. Full-day camp runs Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Half-day campers can attend in the morning from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or in the afternoon from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Camp check-in begins at 8:55 a.m. Children who arrive earlier stay with an adult until staff open check-in. Pick-up is handled at the front desk by a parent, guardian, or approved chaperone.
The indoor gym format keeps the day contained in one place. Campers move between climbing areas, games, crafts, and group challenges without traveling between activity sites.
Campers bring their own food and drinks. Full-day campers need a sack lunch. All campers should bring snacks and a refillable water bottle.
The day includes active movement, climbing, problem-solving, and group games, so campers need steady energy. Snacks should be easy to eat during breaks, and water should be simple for the child to access throughout the session.
Half-day campers have a shorter schedule, but climbing still uses a lot of energy. Even a morning or afternoon session can include bouldering, route practice, games, and team activities. A water bottle and snack are still useful.
Camp Vertical teaches safety as part of the climbing experience. Campers learn how to move on the wall, how to fall more safely, how knots work, and how belay systems are used. These lessons help kids understand climbing as a controlled activity with rules, equipment, and careful attention.
A current waiver is required for every visitor entering the gym. For minors, the waiver must be signed by a parent or legal guardian. Each camper also needs a completed camper profile signed by a legal guardian.
Daily handoff is handled through the front desk. Campers are signed in and signed out by a parent, guardian, or designated chaperone. This keeps drop-off and pick-up organized.
Campers should wear clothing that is suitable for climbing: long shorts or pants, socks, and secure, closed-toe shoes. Skirts or dresses need shorts underneath. Sandals and Crocs are not used for camp activities.
Camp Vertical has a simple but effective rhythm: look at the wall, try a route, make a plan, climb, adjust, and try again. Kids learn that progress can happen one move at a time. That makes the week feel rewarding even when a climb is hard at first.
Full-day campers take part in shirt tie-dyeing and receive a VH tie-dye shirt. It gives the week a creative pause and a take-home reminder of camp.
Crate stacking is another memorable part of the program. It turns height, balance, and teamwork into a playful challenge. Scavenger hunts, crafts, games, and obstacle-style activities keep the week from feeling like one long lesson.
The camp’s core tradition is confidence through effort. Campers are encouraged to keep trying, solve problems, and celebrate small wins with other kids.
Camp Vertical San Marcos combines climbing instruction with hands-on camp activities. Campers learn bouldering and top-rope climbing, then build supporting skills such as knots, belay basics, fall safety, route reading, balance, and coordination. Off the wall, they join games, crafts, scavenger hunts, obstacle courses, crate stacking, and team challenges. The program gives kids a mix of coaching, play, creativity, and physical problem-solving.
