HoWL - Homer Wilderness Leaders

Homer, AK, USA

Overview

HoWL (Homer Wilderness Leaders) offers youth and teens the chance to immerse themselves in Alaska’s rugged beauty while developing critical survival, leadership, and teamwork skills. Based on the Kenai Peninsula, HoWL’s expeditions range from one to 14 days, providing participants aged 10-18 with unforgettable outdoor adventures that include hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, paddleboarding, and mountaineering. Each program is designed to foster confidence, independence, and environmental stewardship. Campers learn wilderness survival techniques, orienteering, and primitive skills while exploring glaciers, mountains, and coastal landscapes. HoWL emphasizes experiential education, encouraging participants to take initiative, ask questions, and make decisions in real-world scenarios. Leadership and team-building activities are woven into every expedition, ensuring campers leave with valuable life skills alongside their memories of adventure. HoWL also prioritizes accessibility and inclusivity. With a robust scholarship program funded by grants and community support, the camp ensures that financial barriers don’t prevent anyone from participating. Programs are tailored to accommodate campers with ADD, asthma, or food allergies. Whether navigating a backcountry trail or building a driftwood raft to sail across Kachemak Bay, HoWL balances challenge with fun. The camp’s philosophy of “fun first” encourages creativity and camaraderie while instilling a deep appreciation for Alaska’s wild spaces. For teens ready to push their limits and embrace adventure, HoWL promises an experience that’s as transformative as it is exhilarating.
