Accommodation
Malibu Makos Surf Camp is a non-residential day camp. Campers attend during the day and return home afterward. No overnight accommodations are provided.
All programming takes place at the beach and in nearby outdoor zones. Campers spend their time in the ocean, on the sand, and in designated activity areas, with regular breaks built into the day for rest, hydration, and meals.
Meals
Lunch and snacks are available for purchase during the camp day through partnerships with local food providers. Made-to-order lunches are offered on select days and typically include options such as quesadillas, burritos, chicken tenders, burgers, wraps, and vegetarian choices. Each lunch includes a snack and water.
On designated days, special group lunches may be provided for campers. Additional snacks are available for purchase at the on-site snack bar, offering a range of familiar options. Families may choose how their child participates in the lunch program, and campers have access to water throughout the day to stay hydrated.
Safety
Safety is a top priority at Malibu Makos Surf Camp. Camp activities are led by a highly experienced team that includes ocean lifeguards, professional surfers, and credentialed educators. Staff members are trained in ocean rescue techniques, first aid, CPR, and ocean safety education, allowing them to respond quickly and confidently in a beach environment.
The camp maintains a very low student-to-instructor ratio, allowing for close supervision and personalized attention in and out of the water. Campers are grouped by age and ability, and instructors continuously assess ocean conditions to adjust activities as needed. Through clear instruction and constant supervision, the camp creates a secure environment where kids can learn, surf, and play with confidence.
Health & Medicine
Malibu Makos Surf Camp follows clear health and care practices designed for outdoor, ocean-based programming. Staff monitor campers throughout the day for signs of fatigue, dehydration, or discomfort and encourage regular water breaks and rest periods.
Families are asked to share any medical conditions, allergies, or special considerations ahead of time so staff can support campers appropriately. In the event of illness or injury, staff respond promptly and communicate with families to determine next steps. The structured supervision and trained team help ensure campers’ well-being throughout the camp day.
Camp traditions
Malibu Makos Surf Camp places strong emphasis on inclusion and smooth transitions, especially for first-time campers. New campers join a dedicated first-day group within their age category, allowing them to learn essential skills, meet peers, and feel comfortable before fully joining regular programming.
The camp also supports flexible attendance, welcoming campers for individual days or longer participation. This flexibility allows kids to join the community at their own pace while still feeling part of the group. Daily shared experiences in the water and on the beach help build friendships and a strong sense of belonging.
