ZooCamp at the Oakland Zoo offers a fun, active week where campers explore wildlife, natural habitats, and teamwork through games, stories, and behind-the-scenes experiences. The atmosphere is energetic and welcoming: children spend lots of time outdoors, touring exhibits, getting up close with animals, and participating in creative science projects. The camp emphasizes communication, compassion, teamwork, and curiosity.
The program is designed for children entering grades K–8, roughly ages 5 to 14. Younger campers thrive on the nature-play and animal interaction, while older ones dive into science themes and conservation. If your child is curious, active, and comfortable outdoors, this camp is especially fitting.
What makes ZooCamp special is its location inside a real working zoo — where the animals and habitats serve as the classroom. Campers enjoy guided tours, animal “close-ups” not open to the public, and themed hands-on activities built around wildlife. The mix of fun (songs, games) and environmental education gives kids a memorable week of learning and laughter.

The program does not provide meals. Families are asked to send a healthy lunch and two nutritious snacks for full-day campers; half-day campers bring one snack. Lunch is stored in a central location, while snacks stay with the group. The camp enforces a strict “no sharing food” policy to protect kids with allergies.
Since the zoo’s dining options are designed for general visitors, parents should plan to pack food rather than rely on on-site meal service.
Safety is a clear priority at ZooCamp. Parents complete a medical form listing conditions, medications, and allergies before camp starts. For children who require extra assistance, the program allows a support person to attend once approved through a background check.
Because the camp is entirely outdoors on a hillside property, sessions may be canceled or adjusted in the event of extreme weather. Staff-to-camper ratios are moderate, keeping supervision strong and allowing counselors to provide attentive care throughout the day.
Health and allergy protocols are well established. The “no sharing food” rule helps manage allergy risks, and staff are trained to carry prescribed items like EpiPens when necessary. Campers are reminded to stay hydrated, and everyone is required to bring a refillable water bottle.
The program is physically active and outdoors, so parents should ensure their children are comfortable walking, exploring, and playing in various weather conditions.
Each week at ZooCamp has its own theme—so children returning for multiple sessions experience new lessons and adventures. Mornings often begin with a lively group assembly at the wildlife theater, complete with songs and skits before splitting into small groups.
A favorite tradition is the “Animal Close-Up,” where campers meet an off-exhibit ambassador animal for an exclusive, hands-on experience. On Fridays, many groups celebrate their accomplishments and reinforce conservation messages through small team projects or symbolic rewards.
The daily schedule blends structured learning with play and discovery. Campers begin the day with a group assembly, then proceed to immersive activities, including animal observation, behind-the-scenes tours, and nature crafts. Each session features a different wildlife theme, with lessons designed to match campers’ age and interests. The balance of exploration, creativity, and fun makes every day feel like an adventure.
Cancellations made less than 7 days before camp are non-refundable; however, partial refunds may be applied for cancellations made with more notice.
Each camper may attend only one A session and one B session per summer, giving more families a chance.
Parents are not permitted to stay during camp hours except for approved aides.
