Performing Arts Workshop Actor’s Sizzle Reel Camp Pasadena

The one-week Actor’s Sizzle Reel program is organized around making a short edited collection of a camper’s strongest performance clips. Campers explore characters and roles across several acting genres and practice scenes that may include serious monologues, funny monologues, newscasting, theatrical performance, accents, and other on-camera work. Acting technique includes commercial, film, television, and theatrical approaches, while speech training focuses on diction, projection, accents, and dialects.

The filmmaking process extends beyond performing. Campers work on creative writing and scripting, storyboarding, film-crew roles, collaboration, directing, filming, on-camera acting, and editing and mastering. Across the week, they learn how those pieces connect as they build their own reel. The final Sizzle Reel is a compilation of selected scenes and best performances rather than a single staged production, giving campers practice both in front of the camera and in the creative process behind it.

The Pasadena Old Town site follows a 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM core day, with supervised arrival before camp and pickup afterward. The format gives campers a defined creative project to develop from performance ideas through recorded footage and final editing.

Families provide food and drinks for the camp day. Campers should arrive with a mid-morning snack, a complete lunch, a beverage, and a bottle of water. PAW notes that camp facilities do not provide refrigeration for children’s lunches, so food should either be non-perishable or packed in an insulated lunch box with an ice pack when cold storage is needed. Families are encouraged to pack enough food for both snack time and lunch. Camp staff do not provide food or drink to campers.

PAW uses daily sign-in and sign-out procedures at its camp locations. The person dropping off or picking up a camper signs the child in or out, and additional authorization is required when someone other than a parent or guardian will handle pickup or when a child has permission to walk or bike home. Campers remain under supervision during the scheduled drop-off and pickup windows.

Teaching staff are screened and vetted before placement, must clear a criminal background check, and have prior experience working with children. PAW also routes parent messages through its office so teaching staff can remain focused on supervising campers during the day.

Parents must disclose allergies, medications, disabilities, or special needs and provide guidance to PAW. The camp may, in some circumstances and with written permission, assist with simple medications. Any medication PAW agrees to help with should be clearly labeled with the camper’s name and instructions, then given to the on-site director for safekeeping.

Families with medical or special-needs considerations are directed to complete PAW’s Disclosure & Guidance Form and discuss the child’s needs with the office. PAW notes that its arts instructors have specialized training in their disciplines but do not have medical training, so some medication or support needs may be beyond what camp staff can provide.

PAW says its teachers are professionals in their respective fields, have or are working toward bachelor’s or master’s degrees, and have prior experience working with children. Teaching staff are screened and vetted before placement and must clear a criminal background check. The published teacher-to-student ratio is one adult for every 10 to 12 children. Instructors also receive specialized training in their arts discipline and field of expertise, and PAW looks for teachers who can present curriculum in an engaging, kind, and entertaining way.

During camp hours, parents can contact the PAW office to relay important information to the camp site. On-site directors and teachers are required to call the office multiple times each day so information can move between families, the office, and the appropriate staff member without pulling teachers away from supervision. Campers’ phones are kept put away during activities under PAW’s cell-free policy.

Pasadena Old Town offers supervised drop-off from 8:45 AM to 9:00 AM before the 9:00 AM camp start. Families needing earlier arrival may add Sunrise Student time beginning at 8:00 AM. The regular day ends at 3:00 PM, followed by supervised pickup; this site closes at 3:20 PM and does not offer Extended Day. Campers should bring their packed snack, lunch, beverage, and water each day. Actor’s Sizzle Reel campers should also bring back the composition book PAW provides for the program.
