Picking up a bluegrass instrument and learning to bring music to life starts at Summergrass San Diego’s Kids Camp. The program welcomes children ages 6–16 to explore traditional bluegrass music through hands-on instruction. Fiddle, guitar, banjo, mandolin, and bass are the instruments at the center of the experience, with participants placed in classes that match their playing background. Newcomers can start at an appropriate level, while more experienced young musicians can continue with material suited to their abilities.
The camp is part of the Summergrass San Diego Bluegrass Festival, held at the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum in Vista. Music education takes place in a festival setting rather than as a stand-alone studio program, connecting young participants with an event devoted to bluegrass. Alongside instrument instruction, campers take stage performance classes. This combination gives them time to focus on playing while also exploring what it means to present music in front of an audience.
A closing appearance on the festival’s main stage is a defining part of Kids Camp. On Sunday, participants take the stage for a shared performance that brings the camp experience into the wider festival. The program may appeal to children curious about traditional string instruments, young players seeking level-appropriate guidance, and families looking for a music-centered day camp with a live-performance finale.
