The John Olive Basketball Camp is a San Diego basketball day camp for boys and girls ages 6–17. The program was created to help children and young adults have fun while learning basketball, and the camp structure reflects that balance. Players are grouped by age, with separate sessions for ages 6–12 and ages 13–17.
The camp is led by John Olive, a former NBA player, former college coach, and longtime high school basketball coach. His background includes playing at Villanova, being drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers, playing for the San Diego Clippers, coaching at Villanova and Loyola Marymount, and leading the boys basketball program at Torrey Pines High School. He has run basketball camps for more than 33 years.
The camp combines technical basketball training with broader personal development. A sample session includes character development, athletic development, ball handling, skill-appropriate drills, game competition, breaks, and competitive skill drills. Campers also work on teamwork, cooperation, and self-esteem.
Younger players ages 6–12 get a morning camp focused on fundamentals and gameplay. Older players ages 13–17 attend afternoon sessions, where the pace and training expectations can better match teen athletes.

The John Olive Basketball Camp is a day camp. Campers attend their assigned session and return home afterward. No overnight lodging, dorm rooms, cabins, or residential supervision are included.
All 2026 camp sessions take place in the Torrey Pines High School gym. The setting is a gym-based basketball environment, not a general recreation campus. Campers should expect a court-focused session with drills, athletic development, games, and coaching.
The schedule is divided by age group. Campers ages 6–12 attend morning sessions from 8:00 AM to noon. Campers ages 13–17 attend afternoon sessions from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Families should plan for daily drop-off and pick-up. Arrival instructions direct families to park in the school lot behind the school and walk across campus to the gym.
This format works best for families looking for a half-day basketball program rather than full-day childcare.
The camp uses an 8-child-athlete-to-1-coach ratio. This gives campers more coach attention than a large open-gym format and supports a more organized training environment.
Children play with their own age group unless they ask to be moved to be with a friend. This age-group structure helps keep drills and games better matched to each player’s size, pace, and stage of development. Younger campers train with other ages 6–12 players, while teens have separate afternoon sessions for ages 13–17.
The gym-based format also keeps the program centered in one athletic space. Campers move through character development, athletic development, skill drills, breaks, competitive drills, and game segments under coach direction.
The John Olive Basketball Camp uses a practice-session model that mixes personal growth, athletic movement, basketball fundamentals, and competition. Campers begin with character development, then move into athletic development that may include jumping, speed, agility, coordination, and balance. This gives players a physical foundation before the basketball-specific work begins.
Ball handling receives a dedicated training block. Campers also work through age-appropriate drills, so the activities better match the group's age and ability level. Passing, shooting, ball handling, and defense are core areas of the camp.
Gameplay is built into the schedule. Campers participate in two 30-minute game competition segments, along with competitive skill drills. This keeps the day from becoming only lines and lectures. Players get to test what they learn in live basketball situations.
Boys and girls are welcome.
All camps are held at the Torrey Pines High School gym.
