For teens fascinated by the cosmos, the University of Arizona's Astronomy Camp offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore the universe under some of the darkest skies in the world. Held at the renowned Kitt Peak National Observatory and Mt. Lemmon Observatory, this week-long residential program immerses participants in the life of an astronomer, combining hands-on scientific inquiry with awe-inspiring stargazing. Campers, aged 13-18, will operate research-grade telescopes, including instruments as large as 61 inches in diameter. They'll engage in activities such as astrophotography, spectroscopy, and digital imaging while conducting their own research projects. Past participants have even contributed to real scientific discoveries, such as tracking asteroids and observing Kuiper Belt Objects. No prior experience in astronomy is required—just a curiosity about the night sky. Days are filled with interactive lectures on modern astronomical topics, solar observing experiments, and hikes through the unique ecosystems of southern Arizona's Sky Islands. Evenings are dedicated to observing deep-sky objects and collaborating with peers on research. The camp’s counselors, including professional astronomers and graduate students, provide mentorship and guidance throughout the experience. Beyond science, the camp fosters teamwork, critical thinking, and a sense of wonder. Campers live in astronomers' dormitories, sharing meals and camaraderie with like-minded peers from around the globe. Whether your teen dreams of a career in science or simply wants to marvel at the universe's mysteries, this camp promises a transformative experience. It’s not just a week of learning—it’s a chance to discover their own “Eureka moment” under the stars.
