Wake Forest Summer Immersion: Debate and Public Advocacy is an overnight pre-college institute for current 9th–12th grade students, approximately ages 14–18. The program is designed for teens who want to become more confident speakers, stronger thinkers, and more effective advocates.
The institute focuses on argument, persuasion, public speaking, communication, legal reasoning, and civic advocacy. Students learn how to prepare for debate, find their voice, analyze current events, respond to social and environmental controversies, and understand the techniques used by influential debaters and speakers.
The experience is active and discussion-based. Students are not expected to sit all day quietly. They practice speaking for self-empowerment, compete in debates on student-driven topics, participate in candid live discussions with peers, and engage with guest speakers from business, politics, advertising, and community organizations.
The program is led by Justin Green, Head Coach of Wake Forest Debate and Professor of the Practice in Communication Studies. His background as a debate and speaking coach gives the institute a strong coaching foundation. This program is a strong fit for teens who enjoy debate, current events, law, public speaking, communication, politics, advocacy, or leadership.
