Step into a two-hour ocean-science experience built around a different marine topic each week. Children explore the aquarium with Birch Aquarium educators, investigate how ocean animals live and adapt, and take part in hands-on science activities that can include animal encounters, dissections, creative projects, aquarist conversations, and behind-the-scenes access. The format is designed for children ages 6 to 10, with separate club series for ages 6–7 and ages 8–10.
Each session stands on its own, so families can choose one topic or join multiple sessions. Younger participants in Aquarium Explorers meet at Birch Aquarium, while Aquarium Adventure sessions for ages 8–10 also include a special Scripps Pier experience. Topics range from fish, molluscs, sea turtles, penguins, marine mammals, and amphibians to sharks, coral reefs, the deep sea, and current ocean science.
This club is a strong fit for children who like asking questions, observing animals up close, making things, and learning through direct experience rather than a long classroom lesson. Activities change with the topic, giving returning participants a fresh focus each time alongside peers in an age-appropriate group. The combination of aquarium access, science investigation, and guided interaction with marine life creates a compact program for curious young ocean enthusiasts.

Marine Science Club is organized as a set of separately bookable two-hour meetings, each centered on one ocean or animal-science theme. The Aquarium Explorers series serves ages 6–7, while Aquarium Adventure serves ages 8–10. Because every meeting has its own topic, children can attend a single session or build a broader experience by joining several.
Activities are matched to the subject of the day. A fish-focused meeting explores variety in shapes, sizes, and colors; other topics look at molluscs, sea turtles, penguins, marine mammals, amphibians, sharks and food webs, coral reefs, or deep-sea life. Depending on the session, children may have an animal touch opportunity, complete a dissection, make a take-home craft, talk with an aquarist, or visit a behind-the-scenes area. The Scripps Science session for older participants meets at Scripps Pier and includes active ocean-science work such as a plankton tow and investigation of collected material.
The program is led by Birch Aquarium’s Education Team and combines guided explanation with hands-on discovery. Most meetings take place at Birch Aquarium, giving participants access to live marine animals and aquarium learning spaces while keeping each session focused on one manageable science question or theme.
Club sessions are limited to registered participants and club staff in the classrooms. Families must complete required electronic waivers and health history information through Ideal-Logic before participation. Closed-toed shoes are required for access to behind-the-scenes locations, and participants are asked to bring sun protection for outdoor activities. Each session has two staff members present, with at least one staff member certified in CPR and First Aid.
Health history information and required waivers are collected electronically through Ideal-Logic before the registered session, and children without completed accounts cannot participate. At least one of the two staff members present at each club session is certified in CPR and First Aid.
Marine Science Club is led by Birch Aquarium’s Education Team. Two staff members are present at each session, and at least one is certified in CPR and First Aid. Program descriptions also reference educator-led hands-on science, aquarist interactions, and guided animal learning.
Families receive an email notification from Ideal-Logic with instructions for completing required forms before the registered club date. Confirmation materials provide directions for the applicable meeting location. Birch Aquarium’s Education Programs Scheduling team handles questions about club programs and registration.
Advance registration is required for each club meeting. Participants should bring a water bottle plus a hat and sunscreen for outdoor activities; closed-toed shoes are required for behind-the-scenes locations. Required Ideal-Logic forms should be completed at least one day before the session. Only participants and club staff enter the classroom during club time. Aquarium Explorers sessions meet at Birch Aquarium. Aquarium Adventure also meets there for most topics, while the Scripps Science session meets at Scripps Pier; location directions are included with confirmation materials.
Refund requests made up to four days before a club session are subject to a $5 cancellation fee. No refunds are provided within two days of the start. If Birch Aquarium cancels a program for insufficient enrollment two days before the scheduled session, the registration is fully refunded.
