Duke Lemur Center

Duke Lemur Center

Durham, NC, USA

Overview

Located at 3705 Erwin Road in Durham, North Carolina, the Duke Lemur Center offers a summer camp experience that combines education, conservation, and adventure. This camp provides an opportunity for children to dive into the fascinating world of lemurs—some of the most endangered primates on Earth—and learn about the critical efforts to protect them and their habitats. What Campers Will Learn The Duke Lemur Center’s summer program immerses participants in the story of Madagascar’s lemurs, their evolution, and the challenges they face. Campers will explore how these ancient relatives of monkeys, apes, and humans thrived for millions of years in isolation on Madagascar but are now critically endangered due to habitat destruction and human activities.

Through interactive lessons, children will learn about: The biodiversity of Madagascar and its unique ecosystems. The threats lemurs face, including deforestation, slash-and-burn agriculture, and hunting. How conservation efforts—both in Madagascar (in-situ) and internationally (ex-situ)—are working to save these remarkable animals. Interactive Activities Campers will enjoy hands-on experiences that bring learning to life: Guided tours to meet some of the center’s resident lemurs. Educational games and activities that illustrate ecological concepts. Workshops on conservation strategies, including reforestation and sustainable practices. Conservation in Action The Duke Lemur Center is a leader in global conservation efforts. Through its DLC-SAVA Conservation program in Madagascar, the center collaborates with local communities to promote environmental education, reforestation, sustainable agriculture, and habitat protection. Campers will gain insight into these real-world initiatives and learn how they can contribute to global conservation efforts.
