Young players spend their camp time on the tennis courts, with instruction organized by playing level rather than a one-size-fits-all format. Beginner and advanced-beginner campers work at the stage of learning the game and rallying with red and orange balls. Intermediate players move into green-dot and yellow-ball rallying and point play, while advanced campers are grouped around tournament and high-school tennis experience.
The youth program emphasizes technical, tactical, and competitive improvement in a fun, creative environment. Summer camp options are arranged in focused three-hour daytime blocks, so families can select the level and time that match a child’s current game. The broader academy serves young players through the teen years, and its camp pathway reaches from first-time and developing players to experienced competitors.
Camp takes place at La Jolla Tennis Club, a public tennis facility in the Village of La Jolla. The club has nine hard courts, including five with lights and three with bleacher seating. On-site tennis services also include a pro shop, ball machine access, and racket stringing. Youth tennis is directed by Head Pro and Director of Youth Tennis Michael Bucher, whose coaching background includes more than two decades working with junior and adult players across multiple skill levels.

The summer program is divided by playing level so instruction can match a child’s current tennis experience. Beginner and advanced-beginner players focus on learning to play and developing rallies with red and orange balls. Intermediate players are expected to rally and play points with green-dot and yellow balls. Advanced campers are described as players who compete in tournaments or play high-school tennis, with separate advanced academy options also listed.
Each track follows a daytime training block. Beginner and advanced-beginner camp runs in the morning, intermediate camp in the early afternoon, and advanced camp later in the afternoon. Intermediate Academy and Advanced Summer Academy are scheduled on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday within their corresponding afternoon blocks. Across the youth academy, the instructional focus is technical, tactical, and competitive improvement while maintaining a fun, creative environment.
The program is led within the club’s youth tennis operation by Michael Bucher, Head Pro and Director of Youth Tennis. His official instructor profile describes more than 20 years of coaching experience and work with players ranging from beginners to nationally ranked juniors and high-level competitors.
