Warm-ups on the sand lead into hands-on surf instruction at La Jolla Shores, where campers practice the core skills needed to catch and ride waves. The program is built for ages 9–15 and welcomes different experience levels, from first-time surfers learning paddling and pop-up timing to returning surfers working on wave selection, turning, and stronger technique. Instruction is adjusted to each surfer’s age and skill level, with ocean safety and awareness woven into the day.
The half-day format combines land-based learning with two surf sessions. Campers cover topics such as rip currents and wave mechanics before entering the water, then apply those ideas while paddling, balancing, standing up, and riding waves. Out of the water, beach games and team activities add movement and social time, while mid-session breaks give campers time to hydrate, reapply sunscreen, and eat a packed snack or lunch.
La Jolla Shores provides a sandy beach, gentle surf breaks, and a long, flat sandbar that support surf instruction close to shore. Soft-top foam surfboards are provided for camp use, and groups use rashguards to help instructors organize campers by age or skill level. The result is a focused week centered on surfing fundamentals, ocean knowledge, repeated practice, and time in the water.

Each camp day starts at 8:30 AM and uses a half-day format designed around surf instruction at La Jolla Shores. Before entering the water, campers warm up and take part in a land lesson covering foundational topics such as ocean safety, rip currents, wave mechanics, balance, and surf-environment awareness. Coaches adjust instruction to the camper’s age and current surfing level rather than using one fixed progression for everyone.
The program includes two surf sessions during the morning. Beginners work on paddling, balancing, pop-up technique, and riding waves, while more experienced surfers can practice wave selection, turning, and stamina. The La Jolla Shores setting provides a sandy beach, gentle breaks, and a long, flat sandbar that lets instruction stay close to students while they practice. Soft-top foam surfboards are provided for camp use.
Time out of the water includes beach games and team activities. A mid-session break gives campers time to reapply sunscreen, hydrate, and eat a packed snack or lunch before returning to the program. Camp ends at 12:00 PM, and the weekly format runs Monday through Friday.
Most campers bring a packed snack or lunch to eat during the mid-session beach break. The break also gives campers time to hydrate and reapply sunscreen before returning to the water for more surfing and camp activities.
Ocean safety and awareness are part of the camp’s instruction, including land lessons on rip currents and wave mechanics before surfers enter the water. The current camp page says instructors are lifeguard certified, ocean experienced, and trained through Surf Diva Surf School. Camp operates in a group setting and recommends soft-top surfboards. If a camper brings a hard board, the child’s ability and daily ocean conditions must be approved before it is used in a surf session.
Campers work with certified surf coaches and instructors who tailor teaching to age and skill level. The current summer camp page describes instructors as lifeguard certified, ocean experienced, and trained through Surf Diva Surf School. Instruction covers both surfing technique and ocean awareness, with coaching for beginners as well as more experienced surfers.

Menehune Camp runs Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM, and the published rules do not allow splitting a week into individual days. Each participant must complete the required digital waiver before attending. Campers should plan for a packed snack or lunch during the mid-session break. Surfboard rental is included in the camp rate; wetsuit rental is not included and is available through the Surf Diva Surf Shop. Registration is first come, first served, and Monday-morning sign-ups are not accepted.
A 16% City of San Diego surcharge is added to the camp price. Surfboard rental is included in the rate, while wetsuit rental is separate and available through the Surf Diva Surf Shop.
