Stanford, CA, USA
Policy debate rewards students who can think fast, research deep, and execute under pressure — often all three simultaneously. It's one of the most technically demanding competitive activities available to high schoolers, and getting genuinely good at it requires structured, expert-led preparation. This program delivers that, at Stanford University, across two intensive weeks. Separate novice and varsity tracks ensure students are challenged at the right level from the first round. Varsity debaters spend week one on the technical foundations: deep resolution analysis, high-quality evidence selection and file organization, affirmative case design with refined plan texts and internal link chains, and negative strategy covering disadvantages, counterplans, and case engagement. Week two shifts to competitive execution — impact calculus, strategic collapsing, theory and procedural arguments, Kritik literacy, and advanced flowing technique. Everything builds toward a structured camp tournament with detailed coach feedback built into every round. Novice students follow a parallel two-week curriculum pitched at the foundational level. Week one covers round structure, research skills, basic case construction for both affirmative and negative positions, and line-by-line refutation fundamentals. Week two develops strategic organization, argument prioritization, flowing habits, and multiple coached practice rounds before a final tournament simulation prepares students for the season ahead. The Stanford setting adds something harder to quantify but genuinely valuable. For many students, it's the first time intellectual seriousness feels like the norm rather than the exception — and that environment has a measurable effect on how students engage with difficult material. For debaters serious about improving their in-round performance, two weeks here accelerates development that would otherwise take an entire competitive season to achieve.
