San Diego Zoo Summer Camp is a full-day, wildlife immersion program for campers entering grades K–8. Designed to spark curiosity and deepen respect for animals, the camp offers students a chance to explore the zoo’s habitats, meet animal care specialists, and participate in engaging, age-appropriate activities such as crafts, games, and science activities. What makes this camp feel truly special is the blend of education and play: campers don’t just watch animals — they learn about animal biology, ecology, and conservation in fun, hands-on ways.
Every week is structured by grade level, which helps ensure campers are grouped with peers at similar developmental stages. Younger campers explore wildlife through sensory experiences, while older kids dive into deeper animal behavior and conservation themes. Throughout each day, certified Zoo educators lead small groups, giving campers personalized attention while ensuring safety and engagement.
This camp is perfect for families who want their children to learn about wildlife while actively participating in discovery. It’s especially suited for curious, nature-loving kids who enjoy walking, learning, and creating, and for young people ready to make new friends in a supportive, structured outdoor classroom.

At Zoo Summer Camp, campers bring their own lunches and snacks, along with a reusable water bottle. The camp recommends packing nut-free foods when possible. Staff refill water bottles throughout the day to keep kids hydrated. For Extended Fun participants (before or after regular camp hours), campers should also bring a snack. The camp expects campers to manage their own food items independently, so practical containers and healthy choices are encouraged.
Safety is central to the Zoo’s summer camp. Educators and team members are fully trained, and the camp follows guidelines set by local and national health agencies. During drop-off and pickup, IDs are checked daily to ensure campers leave only with trusted contacts. Camp staff maintain a strict staff-to-camper ratio—from 1:6 for kindergarteners to 1:10 for older campers—and they are trained in behavior management, positive redirection, and child development.
While exploring the Zoo, campers are always in supervised groups, led by educators who know the layout, animal habitats, and safety protocols. When moving between areas, staff maintain close communication and follow emergency procedures when needed. The program emphasizes respect for animals and surroundings, helping students navigate the Zoo safely.
Before camp begins, families complete health forms with information such as allergies, medications, and behavioral supports. During camp, staff handle first-aid and health concerns as needed. For drugs such as inhalers or EpiPens, campers are asked to carry them in a small backpack for quick access. The camp’s health protocol also includes hydration checks, sun-safety practices, and rest breaks throughout the day. If a child needs medical attention beyond what staff can handle, the team has a plan to connect with local medical resources.
San Diego Zoo Summer Camp is rich in traditions that emphasize wonder, learning, and community. Each camp week often begins with a welcome circle, where campers meet their educators and peers and set intentions for the week. Throughout the week, campers experience behind-the-scenes animal talks, crafts, and habitat explorations. In the afternoons, they may share art projects or displays of what they learned. By the end of the week, campers celebrate with a closing activity — sometimes a group presentation or a “zoo-explorer” challenge — that reinforces what they’ve discovered and encourages them to continue caring for wildlife.
The Summer Camp program at San Diego Zoo is built to be both educational and adventurous. Each morning, campers meet in their grade-based groups to explore habitats, learn from Zoo educators, and participate in wildlife-focused labs and talks. During the day, they move through the Zoo's different zones, engaging in games, crafts, and animal encounters that reinforce what they're learning. They also get time to reflect and ask questions, keeping the experience interactive and thoughtful. For families who need extra time, the Extended Fun program extends the day with options for art, games, or relaxed outdoor play.
For cancellations made up to 30 days before the start date, there is a cancellation fee; full refunds are not offered after that window.
CampDoc health and contact forms must be completed before attendance.
Camper-to-educator ratios vary by age — younger campers have more supervision.
