Wavehuggers Surf Camp

Wavehuggers Surf Camp

Huntington Beach, CA, USA

Overview

Days at Wavehuggers center on getting children into the ocean, building surf skills, and learning how to move through the beach environment safely. Campers work on surf technique with instructors, practice ocean-safety habits, and break up water time with beach games and other activities on the sand. The program welcomes all skill levels and supplies the core surf equipment, so first-time surfers and returning kids can take part without bringing their own board or wetsuit. The camp provides full-body wetsuits and foam surfboards, and the main camp page also lists rash guards among included gear.

The Huntington Beach camp runs at the same beach location used for Wavehuggers surf lessons, north of the pier. Camp programming also includes ocean conservation, giving children a practical connection between surfing and caring for the coastal environment. Camp-wide surf contests add a playful goal to the week, while Huntington Beach sessions also feature Pizza Party Fridays.

Safety is built into the program structure. Surf instructors are CPR and First Aid certified, Huntington Beach camp operates when lifeguards are on duty, and campers rotate between surfing with instructors and beach or water activities with counselors. Families can choose half-day or full-day formats, with weekly and daily booking options listed for the summer program.

Program

Wavehuggers organizes camp around surf instruction, ocean awareness, and shared beach activities. Campers learn ocean safety and surfing technique, then spend time in the water working directly with surf instructors. The program is open to all skill levels, and the camp supplies surfboards, wetsuits, and rash guards. Instructors tailor support to surfers as they practice skills such as paddling, timing a pop-up, choosing waves, and steering a board.

Campers do not spend the entire day in one surf group. For safety, the group rotates between surfing with surf instructors and other water activities or beach games with camp counselors. The FAQ lists a 1:3 instructor-to-child ratio during surfing and a 1:6 counselor-to-child ratio during the non-surfing rotation. Camp programming also includes ocean conservation, connecting time in the water with care for the coastal environment. Ocean safety is taught as part of camp.

Families can choose half-day or full-day attendance. The published summer format includes Monday-through-Friday weekly programs as well as daily drop-in options. Camp-wide surf contests add another shared activity, and the Huntington Beach location lists Pizza Party Fridays as part of its camp experience.

Wavehuggers does not provide lunch for full-day camp. Families are expected to send children with snacks and water, along with the other beach-day items listed in the camp FAQ. The Huntington Beach camp page also lists Pizza Party Fridays as part of the program, but it does not describe this as a replacement for the bring-your-own food guidance.

Safety

Wavehuggers lists CPR and First Aid certification for its instructors and says Huntington Beach Kids Surf Camps operate when lifeguards are on duty. The camp also uses different staff ratios by activity: during surfing, the FAQ lists one surf instructor for every three children; during other water activities and beach games, it lists one surf camp counselor for every six children.

Campers rotate between the surfing group and the non-surfing activity group. Ocean safety is a stated part of the camp program, so safety instruction is included alongside surf technique and water time.

Staff

Wavehuggers describes its instructors as patient, skilled, and CPR/First Aid certified. The camp separates roles during its activity rotation: surf instructors lead children in the water, while surf camp counselors supervise other water activities and beach games. The Huntington Beach camp page also describes staff as energetic and experienced and says they teach surfing technique, water safety, beach games, and ocean conservation.

Logistics

Families should plan for a beach-based camp day. The FAQ asks children to bring sunscreen, water, a swimsuit to wear under the wetsuit, a towel, snacks, a hat, sunglasses, and any personal surf or beach gear they want to use. Wavehuggers provides the core surf equipment. The Huntington Beach location notes that beach parking can be busy on warm summer days, with beach lots and nearby neighborhood street parking available. Arriving with extra time for parking is practical because the beach can be crowded.
