A challenging math problem can have more than one path to an answer. Children at AoPS Academy Summer Camps explore those paths with classmates, test their ideas, and explain how they reached a solution. Instructors use questions and group discussion to guide discovery, giving students room to work both independently and with others. The focus extends beyond practicing familiar rules to tackling problems that combine ideas in new ways.
The Carmel Valley campus provides an in-person setting for this academic summer experience. Across the summer catalog, math camps range from early number skills to advanced contest preparation. Language arts camps develop reading and writing through themes such as creative storytelling and mythology. A middle-school science contest course introduces topics including optics and astronomy. Students choose a course suited to their interests and preparation, rather than following one shared program across all subjects.
Each camp runs for two weeks with three hours of class each day. Families can combine back-to-back courses for a full day of learning. This format suits children who enjoy working through demanding ideas, discussing answers with peers, or spending focused time on a subject they want to explore further.

Course choice shapes the summer experience. Math Beasts Camp 2 pairs core problem solving with mathematical exploration. Children strengthen early math skills through lessons, hands-on activities, and games, then examine how mathematical ideas can guide their game strategies. The course is designed for students who have completed first-grade math or equivalent preparation. At the other end of the math catalog, AMC 10/12 Camp uses individual and team practice competitions to develop strategies for high-school contests.
Writing courses follow their own themes. In Mythology and Advanced Composition, students examine ancient stories and artifacts, interpret evidence, and create an original myth. The work connects close reading, critical thinking, drafting, and revision. Other writing choices include creative writing, playwriting, mock trial, and academic essays. The middle-school science camp introduces selected science competition topics.
The overall teaching approach encourages students to investigate unfamiliar questions before settling on an answer. Instructors lead whole-class discussions while supporting independent and collaborative discovery. Two-week courses meet for three hours on weekdays; the math courses described here assign no homework.
Two-week courses meet for three hours per day. Math Beasts Camp 2 and AMC 10/12 Camp meet Monday through Friday. Back-to-back courses can create a full day of learning.
Summer classes are taught by the instructors who lead AoPS Academy academic-year courses. They guide students through challenging questions and discussions. The Carmel Valley leadership team includes associate directors, an administrative manager, and a senior instructor.
Families can reach the Carmel Valley campus by email or phone with questions about courses and enrollment. To request a summer camp withdrawal, contact the campus by email.
Summer camps use open admissions for age-appropriate students. Match the selected course to the child’s academic preparation: Math Beasts Camp 2 calls for completed first-grade math or equivalent, while AMC 10/12 Camp expects high-school math knowledge.
Enroll more than two weeks before camp begins to pay a $200 deposit, with the balance due two weeks before the start. Later enrollment requires full payment. Withdraw before the first class begins for a full tuition refund; withdrawals after the first class starts are not refundable.
