Comedy Summer Camp For Teens

Comedy Summer Camp For Teens

San Diego, CA, USA

Overview

One unexpected suggestion can turn into a scene, and a small idea can grow into a sketch. Comedy Summer Camp for Teens brings both kinds of creativity to National Comedy Theatre in San Diego. Ages 13–18 explore improv and sketch comedy, combining spontaneous performance with material they write themselves. Professional improv actors guide teens through storytelling, quick thinking, teamwork, and stage presence. Beginners are welcome alongside participants who have performed before, giving young comedians a chance to practice and contribute.

Across the two-week day camp, teens work with others to turn their ideas into comedy. Improv encourages them to listen, respond in the moment, and build scenes together. Sketch writing allows more time to develop a funny idea into material that can be performed. As they try both approaches, participants practice sharing ideas and making on-stage choices. The experience is centered on creating comedy, not simply watching it, with each teen taking part in the group's work.

The camp builds toward an original comedy show. On the final day, participants perform the sketches and improv they have developed for invited friends and family. The performance gives their writing and stage practice a shared goal, while the process gives them room to explore different ways of being funny. This format may appeal to teens who like storytelling, enjoy making others laugh, or want to try performing. It also suits young performers who want to keep working on their comedy skills in a group setting.

Camp meets Monday through Friday, from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM. Participants of all experience levels are welcome, including those who have never performed on stage. The minimum age is 13, and the group includes teens through age 18.
