Hands-on artmaking is the center of MCASD Summer Camps. Campers create projects inspired by works in the Museum’s collection and special exhibitions, with each themed week giving children a different creative focus. The program is designed for ages 6–10 and runs as a weeklong day camp, so young artists can spend several days building ideas through multiple projects and collaborative experiences.
Recent camp themes have included Utopia: Imagining a Perfect World and Mighty Makers and Menders. In Utopia, campers design a shared dream city, tell stories about the future through art, and create comfort objects, community gardens, and artistic survival kits while imagining a better future together. Mighty Makers and Menders shifts toward making and repair: children patch, paint, sew quilts inspired by contemporary artists, craft armor, and take part in a short film project. That themed week also concludes with a screening and art show.
The museum setting keeps the experience connected to contemporary art. MCASD Educators lead the program, while the Museum’s youth learning approach uses galleries and educational spaces for curiosity, learning, and creative work. The camp is a strong fit for children who enjoy visual art, mixed-media projects, storytelling, and making things together with other kids.

The camp is organized as a weeklong day program, with regular hours from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM. Each session uses a theme to connect artmaking with works from MCASD’s collection and special exhibitions. Published themes have included The Great Museum Mystery, Utopia: Imagining a Perfect World, and Mighty Makers and Menders, giving the camp a different creative direction from week to week.
Utopia centers on collaborative imagination. Campers design a dream city, tell future-focused stories through art, and create objects and visual concepts that help them think about community and shared futures. Mighty Makers and Menders focuses on making, repair, and collaboration. Children patch and paint, sew artist-inspired quilts, craft armor, and participate in a short film project. That week ends with a screening and art show for friends and family.
MCASD Educators lead the camp, and the broader youth program uses the Museum’s galleries and educational spaces as places for learning and creative exploration. The structure suits children who like making several kinds of art while working around a clear weekly idea rather than following one repeated project.
MCASD Educators lead the summer camp program and guide campers through art projects inspired by the Museum’s collection and special exhibitions.
Families with camp questions can contact MCASD’s Education Department. The camp information directs program and registration questions to that team.
